Description
JOB GOAL: A Behavior Technician works as a team member with teachers, counselors, school social workers
and other appropriate personnel to establish positive student contacts that develop appropriate and positive
behavior modifications enabling students to succeed. He/she will assist instructional personnel by working
with the student or students to implement positive behavior changes in development and monitoring of
comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals and plans, including a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Work with students one-on-one to affect behavior changes
Evaluate student’s needs and provide interventions to redirect behavior
Implement behavioral programs designed to make positive and appropriate changes
Assess crisis situations and defuse situations using conflict resolution and crisis management techniques
Reinforce appropriate behaviors and redirect negative behaviors
Provide values clarification including rules, expectations and consequences
Implement consequences for inappropriate behavior
With proper training, physically restrain students if necessary for safety
Communication/Consultation
Work with staff to develop an effective program of activities for changing unacceptable behavior of
students
Provide information to parents, guardians, or other care providers concerning action of student
Ensure consistency of behavioral standards by coordinating with appropriate student contacts
Monitor physical and emotional changes in students
Consult with teachers, support staff, and administrators to obtain information and advice on prior behavior problems, and provide information as necessary concerning behavioral concerns
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
An associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
A valid New Mexico PED Education Assistant License as required by the State of New Mexico.
Experience in working with students with behavior issues.
