Special Education Teacher: Learning Disabled

 
SUMMARY OF POSITION: A caring, certified special education teacher will be responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing standards aligned instructional programs in a learning environment that helps special education students develop to their full academic potential.

REPORTS TO:   Building Principal and Supervisor of Special Education

COMPENSATION: As per the CEA Master Agreement.  Years of teaching experience will be considered.

QUALIFICATIONS:                     
  1. Must have a valid 9-12 teaching certificate with certifications to teach special education for the State of Michigan (or be able to obtain temporary approval).
  2. Preferred but not required: Additional certification / experience in English & Language Arts Instruction
  3. Must have an in-depth understanding of special education students and current special education law and the IEP process.
  4. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  5. Possession of excellent oral, and written communication skills.
  6. Must be able to work as part of a team
  7. Experience working with at-risk students and their families preferred.
  8. Must receive a satisfactory response to P.A. 189 Letter. (Misconduct Law)
  9. Must satisfactorily pass:
    1. Law enforcement background checks with fingerprinting.
    2. Personal and professional reference background check.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Responsible for planning and delivering an instructional services that meet the educational goals and needs of special education students as determined by their IEP assigned to their caseload.
  2. Responsible for timely coordination and monitoring of student initial and current IEP's meetings, including goals and objectives as well as classroom accommodations.
  3. Ability to inform and work cooperatively with general education teachers, counselors, and administration.
  4. Shall have a strong understanding of how to differentiate and individualize instruction, including positive behavior interventions and supports.
  5. Ability to explain different disabilities and the impact on learning and serve as a resource for staff.
  6. Ability to observe and assess a student's needs.
  7. Ability to keep all student and parent information confidential.
  8. Ability to keep a positive attitude in working with students, parents, other staff members, and community members who visit Carrollton Public Schools facilities or programs.
  9. Must be self-directed and self-motivated.
  10. Must be highly organized, and able to multi-task.
  11. Display a high level of proficiency in Google Docs Programs including Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Classroom as well as Microsoft Office.
  12. Serve as a member of a positive behavior support team as needed.
  13. Shall be of good character with high moral and ethical values.
  14. Work to ensure a safe environment for students at all times.
  15. Attend conferences, workshops, and professional development as requested.
  16. Meet and greet visitors in a positive, helpful manner.
  17. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job expectation.
  18. Must act in a professional manner.
  19. Other duties as assigned by the building principal/supervisor.
