Job Title: School District Van Driver

Work Schedule: 

  • Work hours vary based on school schedules and extracurricular activities. Typical routes are during morning and afternoon hours, with additional hours for field trips or special events.
  • Must be available to work some weekends or evenings for special activities.


Bargaining Unit: NA, Individual contract
Salary Range: Individual contract,
$17.68/hour - $20.00/hour, depending on experience
Desired Start Date: ASAP


Job Summary:
The School District Van Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, extracurricular activities, and other district-approved locations. The role involves ensuring that all passengers are transported in a safe, timely, and respectful manner, while adhering to district policies, state laws, and safety standards. The Van Driver is also responsible for maintaining a clean, operational vehicle and reporting any issues or concerns promptly. In addition, the Van Driver will assist in transporting international talent when HR requires them to complete their US status processes. Additionally, this position also transports students, staff, and families. This  position must adhere to MN Department of Transportation and School Transportation policies. This position reports to the Senior Officer of Operations, their designee, and the Superintendent's designee. This is a full-time position that requires schedule flexibility based on student and program needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely drive a school van to transport students to and from school, field trips, athletic events, and other school-related activities.
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal driving regulations and safety guidelines.
  • Ensure all passengers board and depart the van safely, maintaining discipline during transport.
  • Conduct routine pre-trip inspections of the van to ensure proper functioning of safety equipment (e.g., seat belts, lights, brakes).
  • Report any maintenance or safety concerns related to the vehicle immediately to the supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate transportation logs, including student attendance, mileage, and any incidents during transportation.
  • Assist students with special needs or mobility challenges as necessary.
  • Communicate with school staff, parents, and guardians regarding transportation issues, delays, or other concerns.
  • Ensure that students follow proper behavior and respect the safety rules while on the vehicle.
  • Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of the vehicle, including washing the van and checking oil, fluids, and tires.
  • Attend required training sessions and safety meetings as scheduled.
  • Support emergency evacuation drills and ensure readiness for such situations.
  • Support with transporting international talent when HR needs assistance for completing their US status or immigration-related processes.
  • Support staff and families with travel needs as assigned by the supervisor and or district cabinets.
  • May assist with the preparation and completion of necessary reports and documentation related to transportation and passenger transport.
  • Adhere to all MN Department of Transportation (MN DOT) rules and regulations and addition to School District policies, especially related to transportation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (may require a Commercial Driver’s License, depending on the district’s policy).
  • Must pass background checks and drug screening in accordance with district policies.
  • Previous experience in driving a passenger vehicle (preferably with children) is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  • Patience and the ability to work with children in a calm, friendly manner.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and first aid is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for long periods while driving.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and assist students with special needs as required.
  • Ability to conduct vehicle inspections and maintenance tasks.
  • DOT physical will need to be done prior start date
