POSITION: Assistant Chief of Police 


LOCATION:  Police Department 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Dougherty County School System is seeking an Assistant Chief of Police to join our roster of experienced, motivated, and effective professionals. The Assistant Chief of Police will assist in the strategic planning, organization, and management of district-wide law enforcement operations. This leadership role works in close collaboration with the Chief of Police to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and property across all DCSS campuses. The successful candidate will bring integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to community-oriented policing within the K–12 educational environment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Certification under the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Act;
  2. Minimum of ten (10) years of supervisory experience in law enforcement, with at least the rank of Captain;
  3. Demonstrated experience in the areas of ( Juvenile Justice, Gang and Narcotics Investigations, and Terrorism Response/Prevention);
  4. High school diploma or GED equivalent (Associate or Bachelor's Degree preferred);
  5. Possession of P.O.S.T. Supervisory and Management Certifications (preferred);
  6. At least 27 years of age;
  7. United States citizen;
  8. Ability to pass all required background checks, physical exams, and drug screenings;
  9. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and the Board may find appropriate.

  1. Strong leadership, organizational, and crisis management skills;
  2. Excellent written and oral communication abilities;
  3. Proficiency in personnel management and law enforcement budgeting;
  4. High ethical standards, professionalism, and discretion;
  5. Physical and mental readiness to meet the demands of the position;
  6. Experience in working with diverse populations and school-aged youth.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Law Enforcement Leadership & Supervision

  1. Assist in the supervision and evaluation of department personnel per DCSS policy and standard operating procedures;
  2. Provide guidance and mentorship to officers; support hiring, assignment, evaluation, and disciplinary actions;
  3. Lead and supervise major investigations, special assignments, and task force operations;
  4. Assume command in the absence of the Chief of Police;
  5. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Training & Compliance

  1. Ensure officer compliance with Georgia P.O.S.T. training and certification standards;
  2. Monitor adherence to department policies, legal standards, and best practices in school-based law enforcement.

Budgeting & Administrative Support

  1. Assist in developing the department’s annual operating budget;
  2. Monitor departmental expenditures to ensure compliance with approved financial plans;
  3. Prepare or assist with timely submission of reports to agencies such as GCIC and NCIC.

School Safety & Emergency Planning

  1. Participate in the creation and revision of the district’s school safety plans;
  2. Collaborate with principals and school leaders to implement safety protocols and preventive measures;
  3. Support emergency preparedness drills, lockdown procedures, and real-time crisis responses.

Law Enforcement Operations

  1. Conduct investigations of criminal activity on or near school campuses;
  2. Enforce School Board policies as well as applicable federal, state, and local laws;
  3. Respond promptly to reports of criminal or disruptive behavior;
  4. Maintain a strong, visible presence across school facilities to deter misconduct.

Community & Student Engagement

  1. Build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff to foster trust in law enforcement;
  2. Support school programs that promote a safe and inclusive learning environment;
  3. Serve as a role model for professionalism, ethics, and civic responsibility.

Documentation & Legal Proceedings

  1. Prepare detailed reports of incidents, investigations, and enforcement actions;
  2. Represent the department in court proceedings, disciplinary tribunals, and administrative hearings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods during patrols, investigations, or surveillance;
  2. Capable of running, climbing stairs, and responding quickly in emergency situations;
  3. Strength to restrain or detain individuals when necessary;
  4. Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds;
  5. Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate vehicles, computers, firearms, and other law enforcement tools;
  6. Sufficient hearing and speaking ability to communicate clearly in person and over radios and phones;
  7. Capable of working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions;
  8. Ability to maintain physical readiness to respond to high-stress or physically demanding situations;

REPORTS TO:  Chief of Police

SALARY RANGE:  12 Month Employee.  Competitive salary and excellent benefits package, in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide
