Reports To: Superintendent of Schools
PURPOSE: The Director of Safety and Security assists the Superintendent to coordinate a safe and secure environment for students, employees and visitors. The Director of Safety and Security plans to ensure safe and secure school facilities by helping to develop, establish and enforce safety and security policies and access control procedures.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or extensive educational background in a security related field is preferred.
Experience:
5 years of experience in safety and security management or related field or work with law enforcement agencies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Excellent communication (written and verbal) and public speaking skills.
Valid Kansas driver’s license.
Self-motivated, flexible, strategic thinker.
High level of interpersonal skills.
Strong proficiency in a variety of computer software applications.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct and/or coordinate safety, security and emergency preparedness training by developing, scheduling and/or facilitating training for staff, students and public safety officials relating to school safety, security and emergency preparedness.
Assist with the development of district-wide safety/security procedures e.g. controlled access procedures.
Coordinate safety/security exercises with local law enforcement agencies and other first responders.
Assist with monitoring the type and frequency of staff and student accidents.
Assist with the research and writing of safety/security grants.
Develop, recommend and monitor safety/security policies, procedures and standards, communicate these both in writing and verbally as needed.
Direct and coordinate periodic audits of school facilities and grounds to determine safety/security issues and needs. Compile and evaluate data, prepare analysis reports and recommendations regarding safety/security improvements.
Assist in advising architectural design teams for construction and renovation projects relative to school safety.
Develop and coordinate ongoing staff development.
Assist in maintaining the district crisis planning.
Provide ongoing communication with students, staff, families and patrons regarding safety related efforts within the district.
Coordinate annual safety/security audits.
Meet with building safety committees and provide helpful information to them on school safety/security topics.
Be a member of the district crisis committee.
Assist with development of Dodge City Public Schools’ portion of the Ford County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.
Attend safety related conference(s) and bring back useful procedures and practices, which promote safety/security.
Coordinate school site visits by the Ford County Emergency Management team to determine the best safety measures in all areas.
Provide frequent safety/security updates to the superintendent.
Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications of the position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle, or feel and talk and hear.
The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms.
The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 100 pounds.
The work environment is in an office setting or school building.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
