TITLE:                                    Adaptive PE Teacher
 
QUALIFICATIONS:             Professional Educator License: Physical Education Endorsement K-12 or K-9/6-12 with Adaptive PE Approval*
                                           *SOWIC will assist employee in application for approval
 
REPORTS TO:                   Executive Director and/or Assistant Director of Special Education and Program Administrator
 
FUNCTION:                        Provide services and instruction that facilitate the physical growth and development of healthy lifestyle progress of students

RESPONSIBILITIES:


*Starting Salary $49,252 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  1. Planning and Preparation
 
  1. Ability to administer, interpret, and report assessments used within Adaptive PE.
  2. Assist with screening, evaluating, and recommending placement of students in adaptive PE.
  3. Identify students' needs through psychomotor assessment/evaluation.
  4. Develop and implement Adaptive PE IEP goals and objectives based on evaluation results.
  5. Provide in-service training to classroom staff as appropriate.
  6. Supervise and train paraprofessionals working in the adapted physical education and general education classes.
  7. Carry out ongoing assessment of physical and perceptual motor needs.
  8. Consult with physical education teachers, special education teachers, assistants and parents, advising on techniques and activities that may be used to enhance a student’s school function related to participation in physical education.
  9. Develop and plan instruction that demonstrate knowledge and understanding of content and individual student needs.
  10. Plan instruction that focus on learner outcomes
  11. Instructional planning takes into consideration resources available.
  12. Create assessments that provide continual feedback on specific lessons as well as individual students goals.

B.  Classroom Environment
 
  1. Work in indoor and outdoor environments.
  2. Creates a classroom environment that facilitates respect and rapport between teacher and students and among students. 
  3. A classroom culture that places emphasis on student learning.
  4. Establishes and maintains orderly classroom procedures and behavior
  5. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 
 
 
  1. Instruction
 
  1. Employ instructional methods and materials that are deemed appropriate for accomplishing identified goals and objectives.
  2. Teach physical education concepts and curriculum to students ages 3-22 through lesson planning in accordance with IEP goals and functional abilities of students.
  3. Enable students in the development of an appreciation for the importance of Physical Education and Health.
  4. Assist students with developing healthy lifestyle behaviors and social skills.
  5. Provide an appropriate and innovative adapted PE program designed to meet individual pupils with moderate to severe disabilities needs, as specified on the IEP, facilitating physical fitness, safety habits, good health, neuro-muscular, coordination, balance, strength, mobility, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, and sports and games achievement.
  6. Provide instruction in the area of recreation and leisure time activity.
  7. Utilize knowledge of exercise physiology to allow for the safe modification of expectations in PE that safely meet the needs and abilities of students.
  8. Attend regular physical education classes with students as assigned to promote positive, age-appropriate, developmentally appropriate, successful participation and physical activity for students requiring Adaptive PE.
  9. Co-teach physical education classes which include typical and special needs students.
  10. Continual communication with students throughout instruction.
  11. Use a variety of questioning and discussion techniques during instruction. 
  12. Create learning tasks and activities that engage students in learning. 
  13. Use of a variety of assessments during instruction to inform teacher of student progress.
  14. Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to student needs during instruction.
  15.  Participates in meetings including behavior management plans, functional analysis of behavior, placement, IEP and annual reviews
 
  1.  Professional Responsibilities
 
  1. Maintain current knowledge of trends related to instruction of Adaptive PE (i.e., course work, conferences, educational meetings, etc.).
  2. Have a working knowledge of adapted equipment particularly for the neurologically and orthopedically impaired student population.
  3. Select, requisition, and maintain instructional materials and aids designated for students requiring adaptive PE.
  4. Maintains an inventory of equipment and associated materials.  Assists in maintaining equipment.
  5. Possess the ability to work in varied settings and devise a working schedule compatible with several school locations. 
  6. Reflective assessment of instruction and fulfillment of instructional outcomes. 
  7. Maintains accurate and complete records of student progress as required by Law and SOWIC Policies           .
  8. Communicates frequently and effectively with families on an individual or small group basis.
  9. Active participant in the professional community.
  10. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with other members of staff.
  11. Seek opportunities to grow and develop professionally. 
  12. Participate in staff development and school improvement activities in order to maintain professional growth.
  13. Participate in events outside of the regularly scheduled work day such as orientation, open houses, or conferences.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the SOWIC administration. .
  15. Demonstrate the ability to perform physical tasks associated with job
  16. Demonstrate the ability to perform activities that utilize the necessary technology tools available including web -based data systems.
 
  1. Evaluation
 
Formal and informal observations and conferences shall occur as needed or desired by the professional staff member or Executive Director of SOWIC, Assistant Director, and Program Administrator and shall be an ongoing process
