Primary Purpose:
Direct and manage the instrumental music and band program as directed by the Director of Bands and the Campus Principal. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in the school band program and society.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Valid Texas All Level Music certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Ability to interpret data
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Bilingual skills preferred
Experience:
5 or more years of teaching experience is preferred but not required
3 years of successful UIL experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Planning and Instruction
Direct instrumental performers, including marching band, orchestra, concert band, soloists, and ensembles with a concentration on the area of percussive arts.
Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, community events and UIL activities.
Support band booster club activities.
Develop and implement plans that fulfill the requirements of the district’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

Work cooperatively with all support staff to determine educational goals, objectives and methods according to district requirements (i.e. State Comp Ed, SPED, 504, B/ESL, etc.)
Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
Oversee and energize the ongoing process of recruiting new members into the band program.
Budget and Inventory
Make appropriate recommendations for purchases related to the band program. Follow district policies and procedures for purchases as outlined in the District Fiscal Manual.
Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department. Oversee proper care, handling and storing of all instruments and equipment.
Coordinate fundraising activities and management of funds. Follow district policies and procedures for purchases as outlined in the district policy.
Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documents required.
Student Management
Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook and band handbook.
Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips. Arrange transportation, lodging and meals as outlined in the District Fiscal Manual.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication
Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, administrators, colleagues and community members.
Maintain professional relationships with students, parents, administrators, colleagues and community members.
Personnel Management
Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of private lesson contractors.
Professional Growth and Development
Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Remain informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies.
Other
Be a positive role model for students and support the GISD District Vision and the mission of the band program.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: As assigned by the Director of Bands
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals; automated external defibrillator (AED), equipment transportation vehicles
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting.
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent walking/marching
Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, humidity and inclement weather), frequent exposure to noise; work on uneven or slippery surfaces; occasional district wide and statewide travel
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
