Title:
School Social Worker

Qualifications:
Certification as determined by State of Connecticut certification authorities and other qualifications as determined by the Hamden Board of Education.

Reports To:
Director of Special Education or Designee

Job Goal:
To help students resolve such personal, social and emotional concerns that interfere with adjustment to school and the capacity to effectively participate in and benefit from academic instruction, scholastic activities and related educational opportunities.

Performance Responsibilities:
    I. Professional Responsibilities
         1. Demonstrates an understanding of the public school system as a whole, including special education laws, regulations, and Planning and Placement Team (PPT) procedures; has or seeks a
              knowledge of local curriculum and of instructional issues; and has an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of students parents, and staff.
         2. Demonstrates competence in standards of professional assessment, documentation and report writing.
         3. Protects the confidentiality of student communications, records and reports.
         4. Maintains records and provides written assessments, reports, and monthly statistics in a timely manner.
         5. Participates in staff meetings, departmental meetings and in-service activities, as available, to promote professional development and improve professional knowledge and skills.
         6. Provides services and practices in full accordance with established principles of professional ethics and legal requirements.
         7. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Special education or designee.
   II. Pupil Personnel Services
         1. Demonstrates knowledge of the theoretical foundations, methodology and practice of the social work profession, particularly as it relates to the role of the school social worker and the
              development of school social work service design and delivery.
         2. Demonstrates an understanding of human growth and development as it relates to learning, emphasizing the psychosocial development of children in working with staff, students, and/or
              families.
         3. Assesses individual student needs, formulates educational diagnoses, and develops appropriate treatment goals and objectives, consistent with State and Federal guidelines.
         4. Selects and uses a variety of treatment interventions, including individualized services and/or group work programs, to meet the needs of students who require social work services to promote
              school functioning and enhance school performance,
         5. Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings, works collaboratively with professional colleagues, and provides consultation to other staff on the special needs of children.
   III. Community Relations
         1. Assists students, families, and the community, using a variety of treatment modalities and interventions, to resolve those personal, social, and/or emotional problems that interfere with school
              adjustment, personal development and/or student learning.
         2. Facilitates home-school communication and provides consultation to parents regarding child development, behavior management and the social, emotional and educational needs of their
              children.
         3. Serves as liaison between home, school, and community-based agencies to promote coordination of interventions and/or services.
         4. Assesses the impact of socio-cultural, ethnic, familial and community factors upon student learning and identifies strategies to help resolve potential barriers to school participation and
              performance.
   IV. School Operations:
         1. Maintains an office environment conducive to the performance of job responsibilities.
         2. Participates in curriculum development and/or evaluation, when indicated by departmental needs, and contributes to the teaching of the appropriate aspects of affective education, including life
             skills planning and social skills development.
         3. Serves as consultant on mental health topics, cultural and ethnic diversity, and the influence of varying lifestyles on learning, school, family, and community relations.
         4. Assesses school climate, identifies areas of dysfunction, advocates for unmet student needs, and provides feedback to staff and administration to enhance school functioning.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to lift, push and/or move up to 50 pounds, including office supplies, books and other instructional materials as well as technology equipment. The employee must be able to hear clearly (correctable to within normal limits) to record telephone information and receive detailed messages. The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from in a noisy environment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision correctable to 20/20, distance vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. Adaptive technology may be used. There is some stress in interacting with students, faculty or the public and in meeting deadlines.

Work Environment:
Exposure to student illnesses. There is regular intermittent exposure to computer screen. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud and is acceptable to this particular environment. The employee must work with students, staff and the public, continuously meeting multiple demands from several people.

Performance of the person holding this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
