Title:  Special Education Assistant Director
Reports to:  Director of Special Education
Location:  Central Office

Minimum Requirements: 
 
Education:  Master’s Degree in supervision and/or administration and certification in the area of Special Education.
 
Experience: At least five years of acceptable school experience in the area of leadership or special education. School administrative leadership experience, preferred.   Any exception is left to the discretion of the Superintendent.
 
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Skills in working with people; effective writing and speaking skills; knowledge of rules and regulations relating to the administration and implementation of special programs; ability to interpret research for the improvement of the educational program.
 
Primary Function: To assist in the administration and supervision of the Special Education programs throughout the system.
 
Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assumes leadership for providing a continuum of services for all exceptional students.
  • Serves as consultant to principals, classroom teachers, and instructional specialists.
  • Assists in the reporting of Full-Time Equivalency (FTE) counts for exceptional students.
  • Assists principals as a Local Education Agency (LEA) in their buildings to meet eligibility requirements.
  • Assists in building schedules of students.
  • Assists in state-wide data collection and reporting.
  • Assists in implementing in-service education for Special Education/Federal programs personnel.
  • Assists in securing appropriate consultative help, facilities, materials to implement Special Education/Federal programs.
  • Monitors federally supported projects to assure explicit compliance with all federal regulations and project criteria.
  • Assures confidentiality of records for any child who has received Special Education services.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in Special Education law.
  • Participates in Special Education activities at the state and local levels.
  • Meets the growth rate needs and numbers of Students with Disabilities (SWD) as the department continues to apply the scope of services applicable to an increase of segments served.
  • Works with building LEA on discipline issues (adherence to Special Education rules, FBAs and BIPs).
  • Provides new teacher support (accommodation, implementation and paperwork navigation).
  • Coordinates and participates in IEP staffing and annual reviews and facilitates the compilation of documentation for student records.
  • Performs other duties and assumes other such responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Special Education.
