Job Description:
The band director is responsible for leading and managing one of the District’s instrumental music and band programs for students in grades fifth through eighth. The band director develops and implements instructional plans, teaching students fundamental and advanced musical concepts during the school day through a pull-out model, as well as during after school rehearsals. The band director organizes and rehearses for performances/concerts that are presented to the school and the community. The band director works with fifth grade students from assigned intermediate schools, as well as sixth through eighth grade students from one of the District’s middle schools.   

Qualifications:

  • Current and valid  Illinois Professional Educator License with a music endorsement for grades K-12;
  • Strong knowledge of instrumental techniques, music theory, and ensemble direction;
  • Knowledge of the overall operation of an instrumental music program;
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to collaborate with the other band directors to ensure a cohesive and high quality instrumental music program for the District;
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population and establish open and regular communication with parents and guardians;
  • Valid state of Illinois driver’s license; and
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates and plans for instruction during after school band rehearsals from approximately 2:40 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. four to five days per week, ensuring musical growth and discipline.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive band curriculum that aligns with District and state music education standards.
  • Provides instruction in music theory, instrument technique, and ensemble performance.
  • Prepares students for concerts and competitions.
  • Fosters a love for music and encourages student participation in band.
  • Assesses student progress and provides feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Adapts instruction to accommodate students of different skill levels and learning needs.
  • Maintains an inventory of instruments, sheet music, and band equipment.
  • Coordinates band-related events, including concerts, trips, and fundraisers.
  • Manages funds and identifies cost estimates based on the needs of the band program.
  • Establishes a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Salary and Benefits:
  • Starting salary of $49,029; (Please click the link to view the current (salary schedule);
  • Salary is commensurate with education and experience;
  • After school rehearsal time compensated at one-sixth of the per diem rate, per hour of additional instructional time;
  • Qualified candidates may be granted up to twenty years of verified full-time teaching experience for credit on the salary schedule;

Working Conditions:
  • 180 days per year – August through May/June.
  • Work Hours: 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
  • Four to five days of after school rehearsal time from approximately 2:40 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • Travel between intermediate schools and a middle school may be required to deliver instruction.
  • Evening and weekend commitments for performances and events.
