Job Title: 6th Grade Teacher, Band Director

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Dept./School: Intermediate School
Calendar: 187 Days
Primary Purpose:
Direct and manage the overall program of sixth grade instrumental music. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and district requirements. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in band.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate
Demonstrated competency in the subject area assigned
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Ability to interpret data
Strong organizational, public relations, communication, and interpersonal skills
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Experience:
One year teaching and band directing experience, or student teaching/approved internship experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Planning
1. Direct beginner instrumental performers, including homogeneous classes, and ensembles, as assigned within the district’s vertical team of band directors.
2. Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of the school district.
3. Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
4. Provide for band participation at events such as concerts, pep rallies, recruitment events.
5. Support band booster club activities.
6. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
7. Recommend policies to improve program.
Budget and Inventory
8. Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
9. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
10. Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
11. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department.
12. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment including, but not limited to, music, music stands, chairs, uniforms, instruments, electronic equipment and overseeing the care of the band hall facilities.
Instructional Strategies
13. Develop and implement lesson plans and show written evidence of preparation as required.
14. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
15. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
16. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
17. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
18. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
19. Work with other band staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
20. Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
21. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
Student Management
22. Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
23. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
24. Accompany and supervise students as all band functions, and when assigned by campus or district administration.
Personnel Management
25. Oversee recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of students.
Communication
26. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, teachers, and the MISD Director of Fine Arts.
27. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
28. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately.
Professional Growth and Development
29. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
30. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
31. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
32. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise assigned teacher aide(s) or student teacher(s).

Maintain emotional control under stress. Lifting more than 30 pounds. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Move instruments, media equipment, chairs, and other classroom equipment. Frequent district travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
