Description
Job Title: Special Education Aide – ASPIRE (18+ Services)
Reports to: Special Education Coordinator
Dept/School: High School Campus and Community Environments
Work Year: 186 days
Base Salary: $25,000 Actual salary will be calculated based on experience.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Assist special education teacher in providing for physical and instructional needs of students, between the ages of 18 and 22, with limited functional language, potential behavioral challenges, and other disabilities in the special education setting. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of program coordinator and immediate direction of certified teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Associates degree or two years of higher education preferred
If hired, must complete SBEC certification process to obtain an Educational Aide Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work with students with disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Knowledge of general office equipment
Experience:
Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Help teacher prepare instructional materials.
Help maintain equipment.
Help teacher keep data and administrative records and prepare required reports.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
Help manage behavior of students.
Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and behavioral needs.
Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes community and job site duty.
Keep teacher informed of special needs or concerns of individual students.
Maintain confidentiality.
Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned.
Complete other duties as assigned.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to assist with lifting adult students. Ability to work in a variety of working environments at training sites in the community. Move materials and equipment as well as miscellaneous items at training sites as needed.

The Special Education Department maintains an expectation that all staff will assume shared responsibility for the health, safety, and confidentiality of all students and adults; which may include implementing, supporting and documenting behavioral intervention strategies and/or providing school health, related, and personal care services.
