JOB TITLE: Assistant Superintendent for Secondary (9-12+ Programming)
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt (Administrative), salaried employee.
WORK DAYS: 246 days (does not include holidays).
STANDARD HOURS PER DAY: 8 hours per day.
WORK YEAR: The work year for the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary begins on the first weekday in July, and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June.
SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS: The Assistant Superintendent for Secondary is paid on the “Administrators” salary schedule, and is eligible for benefits on the “Administrators” benefits schedule.
REPORTS TO: The Assistant Superintendent for Secondary reports to the Superintendent of Schools.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Assistant Superintendent for Secondary collaborates with and assists the Superintendent to implement Board and District goals by providing leadership, guidance, and support to the Principal of Warren Central High School, the Director of Walker Career Center, the Director of Alternative Education, the Director of Warren Online Academy, and the Director of Adult Community Education. This role also oversees programs and services to ensure alignment with local, state, and federal policies and guidelines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and Oversight
Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to principals, directors and school leadership teams within the assigned schools.
Ensure assigned schools and programs are meeting district goals related to academic achievement, safety, and student well-being.
Regularly visit schools to assess progress, offer support, and provide feedback on educational programs, operations, and leadership.
Provide two-way communication with the Superintendent
Academic Achievement, College and Career Readiness, School Improvement
Promote a culture of high expectations, student achievement, and accountability that facilitates equitable learning opportunities for all students.
Facilitates coordination between district leaders and community partners to provide work based learning and college and career readiness experiences.
Collaborate with school leaders to develop and implement school improvement plans, focusing on closing achievement gaps and improving student outcomes.
Support schools in using data to inform instruction, monitor student progress, and make adjustments to student interventions and or teaching strategies.
Provide leadership and oversight of the 9-12 Intersession and Summer School programs.
Promote the sharing of best practices among schools to improve teaching and learning.
Participate and contribute to the Instructional Cabinet.
Principal / Director Supervision and Development
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate school principals and directors, providing guidance on leadership development, staff management, and school operations.
Identify and address professional development needs of school leaders, ensuring they have the resources and training to meet district expectations.
Facilitate regular meetings and professional learning opportunities for principals and directors to collaborate and address common challenges.
Operational Efficiency and Resource Management
Work with district departments, including Human Resources, Finance, and Operations, to ensure that schools are efficiently managed and properly resourced.
Oversee the implementation of district policies and procedures in areas such as budgeting, staffing, and facilities management within the assigned schools.
Address operational challenges, such as school safety, student transportation, and technology needs, in coordination with central office departments.
Stakeholder and Community Engagement
Serve as a point of contact for secondary school communities, including parents, community organizations, and local government officials.
Foster positive relationships between schools and their communities, ensuring that community concerns are addressed and that families feel supported.
Communicate district policies, goals, and achievements to stakeholders and represent the district at community events as needed.
Compliance and Policy Implementation
Ensure that all schools are in compliance with district policies, state and federal regulations, and legal requirements.
Monitor the implementation of district-wide initiatives, such as student support programs, safety protocols, and special education services.
Work with principals and directors to address issues related to student discipline, attendance, and school climate in alignment with district policies.
Safety, Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution
Collaborates with Chief of Police, Chief Operations Officers to assist in handling school-level crises and emergencies, including safety concerns, conflicts, and community issues.
Support school leaders in resolving conflicts with staff, students, or parents, using mediation and problem-solving strategies.
Support the media spokesperson on matters related to student issues.
Human Capital
Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit, develop, and retain highly qualified secondary education staff.
Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and professional excellence among secondary educators and leaders.
Develop and implement professional development plans aligned with district priorities and staff needs.
Support succession planning and leadership development for secondary-level positions.
Board Responsibilities
Provide leadership in the implementation of Board Goals and Policies.
Attend board meetings and prepare reports for the board as directed by the superintendent.
Assist with the enforcement of federal and state law, administrative rules, and board policy.
Advise the board on federal and state law, administrative rules, and board policy pertaining to schools, as directed.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
ENTRY-LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Education /Training: Specialist degree (Ed.S.) required. An earned doctorate from an accredited institution is preferred;
2. Experience: At least 10 years of experience as a teacher required; additional experience as a building Principal preferred.
3. Certification and/or Licenses: Holds or is eligible for certification in educational leadership and/or administration and supervision required.
4. Other: The ability to perform the essential functions and fulfill the physical/sensory/environmental requirements of the job (with or without reasonable accommodations) is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary involve a daily combination of office work, traveling throughout the District, and interacting verbally with staff, school business officials in other districts, and vendors.
Efficient use of a personal computer is important to the effective accomplishment of these job responsibilities.
This job does not require heavy lifting or other physical abilities often associated with manual labor.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The ability to communicate verbally in person and via telephone is very important. The ability to compose documents is very important.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Tasks are regularly performed without significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
