Rudyard Area Schools Athletic Director

Rudyard Area Schools is a class C school in the Eastern Upper Peninsula that serves 625 students from K-12 grade.  The district offers 12 varsity opportunities,  12 junior varsity opportunities, and 12 middle school opportunities, and it is looking to expand its elementary programming.  As members of the Eastern Upper Peninsula conference, the Great Lakes 8 Football Conference, and the MHSAA, the Athletic Directors primary purpose is ensuring that all sports activities, from elementary through high school, are well-coordinated and effectively support the development of our student-athletes.  Rudyard has a long academic and athletic success history, and the athletic director's job will be to keep that tradition alive throughout communities.
Athletic Director Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all schedules with the principal and the conferences that our school represents.
  • Assign and supervise all gatekeepers and workers for all athletic contests.
  • Examine all playing arenas to see if they are available and ready for play.
  • Organize preseason Coaches' meetings and oversee all parent meetings.
  • Obtain a playing arena when there is a need for practice or to use as a game site.
  • Confirm the availability of sports equipment that is needed for the game.
  • Arrange for payment of all game officials.
  • Arrange for all the changes that are needed for all gatekeepers.
  • Make available change boxes, tickets, stamps, etc., which gatekeepers need.
  • Coordinate all tournaments and post-season games with the principal.
  • Coordinate with the principal the welfare of all athletes.
  • Verify the eligibility of all athletes.
  • Suggest the monetary allowance for athletes and coaches when playing a contest that requires overnight lodging and food.
  • Schedule physical examinations for all athletes.
  • Work with coaches and the principal to ensure each athlete's eligibility is certified before participation.
  • Work with the principal, local EMS, and the school SRO to secure law enforcement officers to provide security and safety for athletic contests.
  • Coordinate all athletic functions such as booster club meetings, athletic banquets, and other athletic meetings.
  • Coordinate the attendance of coaches at coaches’ clinics and workshops.
  • Serve as public relations liaison for all routine news media requests related to athletics.
  • Coordinate with the principal any postponement of contests because of weather or other factors.
  • Work with coaches to solve morale problems. Serve as a booster of the school's athletic program.
  • Evaluate Varsity coaches at the end of each season.
  • Coordinate the purchase, reconditioning, and storage of athletic equipment.
  • Coordinate the preparation for all home contests and events; supervise or direct cleanup after contests.
  • Coordinate transportation for all athletic events requiring travel
  • Assists in planning a budget.
  • Serves as director of special events and promotions for the athletic department.
  • Schedule and conduct pre-season meetings for all sports as the MHSAA requires.
  • Submit athletic eligibility summary and pre-season meeting certification to the MHSAA as required at the beginning of the season.
  • Ensure all coaches are aware of RAS, MHSAA, and NFHS rules applicable to their sport and the expectations of coaches.
  • Ensure compliance with all RAS, MHSAA, and NFHS rules.
  • Work with the Business Office to develop a supplement plan for paying coaches.
  • Submit work orders for necessary facility repairs or routine maintenance.
  • Provide booking agents with a complete schedule before the season.
  • Work with the principal to find new coaches as openings occur.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.
Work Hours & Benefits

Athletic directors can expect to work 5-6 days a week, with hours depending on the time of year and the kind of sports that are occurring.  The district will provide a cell phone with the understanding that you are always on call if issues are to arise.  This is an EDUStaff position, meaning you are paid through a third party.  The starting salary is no less than $25,000 per calendar year.

  • Ability to manage relationships with coaches, school administrators, and the public
  • Skilled at providing motivation and direction to the coaches
  • A resourceful leader who delegates tasks effectively
  • Conference attendance and ongoing professional development are necessary
  • Strong analytical, administrative, and multitasking skills
  • A proven track record with creating and overseeing an athletic department’s strategic plan
