Job Description

 

JOB TITLE: Paralibrarian CLASSIFICATION: Nonexempt  
REPORTS TO: Supervising Campus Librarian / Principal / District Lead Librarian PAY GRADE: Choose pay category. PayGrd Choose # of days worked  
LOCATION: Assigned Campus DATE REVISED:   1/14/2022


PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Manage the physical circulation of all materials within the library.  Facilitate interlibrary loan borrowing among district campuses.  Assist with library management under direction and supervision of the campus certified librarian.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 48 or more college credit hours and/or successful completion of the three areas of assessment and classroom observation as required by the NCLB Act; OR
  • Highly Qualified Paraprofessional Certification
  •  
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Basic working knowledge of library science
  • Ability to implement planned program strategies
  • Knowledge and/or strong interest in literature appreciation
  • Strong public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Competency in computer usage and technology
Experience:
  • Experience in a public school environment, preferably a library or classroom
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Circulation
  1. Staff the circulation desk (or supervise student or volunteer staffers).
  2. Handle all routine check-in/check-out transactions (or supervise such).
  3. Receive and record monies for fines and lost/damaged books.
  4. Maintain sign-in sheets for unscheduled users.
  5. Maintain schedule for class sign-up by faculty and staff.
  6. Shelve returned materials (or supervise such).
  7. Prepare and distribute reports relating to overdue materials and other circulation issues.
  8. Oversee the circulation of classroom sets, calculators, etc.
Materials Processing
  1. Check received items against invoices or packing slips.
  2. Prepare received items for cataloging by the librarian (apply automation materials as well as property stamps and other identifying markers).
  3. Maintain record of magazines received.
  4. Prepare magazines and other materials for bindery.
  5. Shelve newly arrived materials in appropriate display areas.
  6. Maintain inventory record of daily/weekly newspapers received.
  7. Assist in collection development under direction of librarian, including weeding out obsolete items.
Student Services
  1. Help create and maintain an environment conducive to learning.
  2. Provide instruction in using library resources when called upon to do so.
  3. Facilitate use of equipment by keeping printers and copiers in good working condition.
  4. Help students orient themselves correctly in the library to locate needed resources.
Miscellaneous Assignments
  1. Enter AS400 requisitions as directed by the librarian.
  2. Maintain and circulate audiovisual equipment, sending items needing repair to the appropriate district personnel.
  3. Maintain current patron records database.
Other
  1. Perform duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner.
  2. Conduct oneself in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with generally accepted community standards.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise the performance of student assistants as well as volunteer parents.

  • Exposure to childhood communicable diseases; good general health and stamina needed
