Job Description
Title: 2nd Grade Teacher                                                                      Location:  Markham School  
Employment Type:  Full Time                                                                 Work Days: 10-month position
FSLA:  Exempt                                                                                      Reports to: Building Principal                                                                
 
Job Summary:
The 2nd Grade Teacher provides high-quality instruction that promotes student learning and development in alignment with the Illinois Learning Standards and district curriculum. The teacher establishes a positive and inclusive classroom environment, utilizes data-driven instruction, and collaborates with colleagues and families to ensure each student’s academic and social success.
Education, Certification, and Licensure:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Licensure: Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with an Elementary Education (K–9) endorsement.
  • Knowledge of Illinois Learning Standards and research-based instructional practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain an effective classroom learning environment.
  • Ability to foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment that supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of all students.
Experience:
  • Prior successful teaching experience at the elementary level preferred.
  • Experience designing lessons that support diverse learning needs and promote critical thinking.
  • Familiarity with Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) frameworks.
  • Experience integrating instructional technology to enhance student engagement and achievement.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with staff, families, and administration.
 Essential Duties and Specific Responsibilities:
  • Plan and deliver engaging daily lessons in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those with IEPs, 504 Plans, and English Learners.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate instructional strategies that promote student engagement and mastery of grade-level standards.
  • Utilize formative and summative assessment data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, grades, and progress.
  • Create and maintain a classroom environment that supports positive behavior, collaboration, and mutual respect.
  • Integrate technology tools (such as Google Classroom, I-Ready, or Seesaw) to enhance learning and assessment.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians to share student progress and encourage home-school partnerships.
  • Collaborate with grade-level colleagues, interventionists, and support staff to design coordinated learning experiences.
  • Participate actively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), staff meetings, and district professional development.
  • Support the implementation of district initiatives related to equity, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with students, families, and staff.
  • Ability to use assessment data to plan, modify, and differentiate instruction.

  • Ability to establish positive relationships with diverse learners and families.

Terms of Employment:
Salary is based on market comparisons as determined by the Superintendent and Board of Education.
Twelve-month work year.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in a standard elementary school classroom setting. Requires mobility throughout the classroom and school building, frequent interaction with students, and occasional lifting of instructional materials. Moderate noise level typical of classroom environments. Occasional evening or after-school hours required for meetings, parent conferences, and school events.
