Job Overview:
Saugatuck Public Schools is seeking a skilled and proactive Maintenance Director to lead and manage the district’s maintenance team, ensuring that all facilities, equipment, and grounds are safe, operational, and well-maintained. This position requires strong leadership abilities, excellent communication skills, and comprehensive knowledge of maintenance practices, safety regulations, and facility operations. The ideal candidate will take a hands-on approach to provide efficient service while maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, safety, and functionality within the schools.Key Responsibilities:
- Supervision & Leadership:
- Effectively collaborate with contracted service providers such as custodians, lawn maintenance, snow removal, food service, and mechanical trades contractors.
- Schedule, assign, and review daily maintenance tasks, ensuring timely completion and quality work.
- Facility Maintenance & Repair:
- Oversee routine and preventive maintenance of school buildings, grounds, mechanical systems, and equipment (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
- Ensure all facilities are safe, secure, and meet local, state, and federal regulations, including fire and safety codes.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests and troubleshoot building systems to resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
- Develop and manage maintenance budgets, including tracking expenses and approving requisitions.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels for repairs and routine tasks.
- Recommend purchases of new equipment, parts, or tools as needed.
- Project Management:
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee construction or renovation projects, working with contractors to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Ensure all project work aligns with district goals, safety standards, and building codes.
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify potential problems and prioritize repairs or upgrades.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and other relevant agencies.
- Implement and enforce safety policies and procedures, including conducting regular safety training for staff.
- Maintain records of inspections, safety protocols, and repair work for regulatory purposes.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Vocational or technical training in building maintenance, facilities management, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in maintenance, building operations, or facilities management, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Proficiency in reading blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Basic computer proficiency (e.g., email, work order systems, and Microsoft Office).
- Certifications: Valid driver’s license required. Certifications in HVAC, electrical, or plumbing preferred. OSHA certification is a plus.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with occasional exposure to weather conditions, hazardous materials, or potentially unsafe equipment.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for emergency repairs or special projects.
- Typical work day is from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm.
