POSITION TITLE: Manager Transportation
REPORTS TO: Deputy Superintendent for Operational Services and/or designee
CATEGORY: Administration/12 Months/IMRF
FLSA: Exempt
SALARY: Regionally Competitive
Summary: Direct, manage, supervise, and evaluate all aspects of transportation: operations, fleet maintenance and meet all requirements of the daily instructional program and extra-curricular activities.Essential Functions
- Directs department operations (e.g. budgeting, safety programs, site inspections, preventive maintenance, etc.) for the purpose of providing services within established time frames and in compliance with related requirements
- Design, develop, implement, and continuously update bus stops and routes to insure the most efficient, economical, convenient, and safe pupil transportation routing system to meet district needs and accommodate efficiency of operation.
- Resolve issues, concerns, and complaints pertaining to student transportation and act as liaison with parents for complaints and special requests.
- Develop and administer annual transportation budget by ensuring that purchases are in accordance with current laws and procedures and are economical and efficient.
- Ensure operation of fleet vehicles is in compliance with city, state, and federal law and district policy.
- Maintain all district-owned transportation equipment and develop plans for preventive maintenance by operating a fleet maintenance and service facility which will ensure all vehicles are safe and in the best possible condition.
- Conduct in-service training for all transportation personnel as needed.
- Notify the administration of the conditions of roads and bridges during inclement weather.
- Perform other duties as the administration may find necessary and appropriate, carrying out all assigned duties efficiently, promptly, and dependably.
Qualifications/Requirements: To be considered for this position, the candidate must possess the following required education, certification, skills, experience and/or qualifications:
- Background in transportation, with extensive business experience.
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
- A satisfactory driving record with a valid commercial driver’s license, class B with passenger endorsement.
- Experience in one or more of the following fields:

c. Transportation or Logistics
- The ability to manage personnel and communicate effectively.
- A general knowledge of the laws, regulations, and guidelines that govern student transportation.
- A general knowledge in the operation and supervision of vehicular maintenance programs.
- Have a general knowledge of vehicle routing systems and boundary planning.
- Transfinder® and similar programs
- Strong planning, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
- Highly collaborative, detail oriented, articulate, and able to build strong relationships with all levels of staff and external audiences
- Strong interpersonal communications and organizational skills required
Working conditions
Mental demands/Physical demands/Environmental factors- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
- Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
- Stand, walk, crouch, and do moderate lifting up to 40 lbs.
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
