ESL Tutor/Translator
 
Description
Position provides assistance to teachers in the daily management and instruction of students. The work involves observing, reporting on behavior and learning, and closely monitoring the needs of ESL students. Reviews, evaluates, translates, and records documents; performs related duties as required or assigned.

Principal, Assistant Principal and ESL Teacher
 
Qualifications
Candidates must meet a minimum threshold of qualifications, comprising both education and experience, that furnishes them with the necessary skills and knowledge for effective performance.  Standard qualifications must align with:
 

  • Bilingual candidate preferred; Associate’s Degree or college credit preferred; High School Diploma or GED
            required
  • Experiential knowledge of the culture, customs, and governmental and school services of countries wherein English is a second language; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in English; skilled in interview and conference techniques; and the ability to develop and maintain successful working relationships with Northampton County Public Schools and Northampton County Social Services personnel, peers, and citizens from varying cultural and/or language backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates the ability to supervise and instruct students.
  • Must complete Bilingual Staff Interpreter Training in Behavioral Health Settings within the first year of employment.
 
Performance Responsibilities
  • Reviews and evaluates documents; translates school-home communications and systemwide documents from English to the target language; clarifies terminology and content; uses technology in English and the target language appropriately to format, translate, save, and retrieve work; assumes responsibility for quality of translation work submitted by reviewing, editing and revising own work; responds to editing suggestions of others; edits work of other translators; learns new translation skills and new technology, both hardware and software, maintains records of translations; and writes reports, some of which may involve extensive editing.

  • Organizes and maintains schedule of student and parent contacts.
  • Communicates with the students’ classroom teachers to identify their academic strengths/needs.
  • Communicates with parents and teachers regarding students’ academic progress.
  • Attends all required training, in-services, and meetings.
  • Maintains records and submits reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Teaches small groups as assigned using the required materials (adapted to specific groups/subjects) in different parts of the room or in different locations around the school.
  • Is a resource for students regarding other learning opportunities.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work and remedial work with individual students or with small groups.
  • Maintains a positive and professional attitude towards children, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Provides a safe, stable environment conducive to the development of the children’s concept of self and positive attitudes towards learning.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding information concerning children and families.
  • Able to make or assist with presentations to the public (if necessary).
  • Assists with conducting student assessments.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Provides interpretation in educational settings as needed.
  • Performs duties as assigned by building administrators or teacher.
 
 
Physical Requirements
  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer.
  • To see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
  • Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone.
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

Terms of Employment
Contract Length – Ten Months
FLSA Status-Non-Exempt
Salary to be established by the School Board in accordance with the ESL Tutor/Translator Scale.
 
 
Evaluation
Job Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the School Board’s policy on
Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
