This job assignment receives administrative direction from the High School Principal, Assistant Principal (Director of Athletics) or other administrator as assigned.
Summary of Assignment
This assignment is accountable for assisting the Marching Band Director in providing an effective instrumental music education to students including all aspects of the marching band organization, auditions, programming and rehearsing all half-time performances at football contests, concerts, pep rallies, contests, civic performances, and festivals.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- Employment in this class is conditional upon possession of a valid Illinois State Board of Education teaching certificate appropriate to the teaching assignment.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Illinois Motor Vehicle operator's license.

- Knowledge of music software, marching band charting programs, and music writing programs;

Essential Functions
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the assignment and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.
- Assists the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life;
- Attends educational field trips;
- Attends meetings and in-services as required;
- Attends parent/teacher conferences;
- Collaborates with colleagues;
- Competes in a minimum of three (3) contests during the winter season;
- Conducts marching band practices/activities at a minimum four (4) hours each week;
- Coordinates pre-game activities with PA announcer, football coaches, and Athletic Director;
- Directs the marching band;
- Distributes course-related assignments;
- Ensures safety of students;
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards, and conferences;
- Follows the scope and sequence of the approved instructional program;
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required;
- Maintains respect at all times for confidential information;
- Notifies parents if student is not meeting classroom goals;
- Organizes and coordinates any fundraising activities for the marching band;
- Prepares clear and timely lesson plans;
- Prepares marching band to play/perform at all home varsity football contests including half-time performances and to march in the homecoming parade;
- Prepares students for marching band contests/events and/or festivals;
- Presents clear, complete, and accurate explanations utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable to the level of learners;
- Provides guidance to students to promote their educational development;
- Schedules marching band related events, including performances, camp and clinic arrangements, field trips, and award programs (Note: All required performances will be listed at the beginning of each school year and approved by the High School Principal)
- Supervises all aspects of the marching band camp;
- Supervises the Flag Corp/Color Guard Director and coordinates marching band activities with the team;
- Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities;
- Teaches students using sound instructional practices;
- Performs related duties as required.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Employees appointed to positions in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.
