Salary: Range 22 (Step C-$18.50 to Step G-$23.08)

Job Description
CUSTODIAN
Classified Employees Salary Schedule – Range 22
I. DEFINITION:
To keep assigned buildings clean and orderly, keep school grounds clean and to do other work as
assigned.
II. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education:
• Graduation from High School or its equivalent.
B. Experience:
• Some custodial experience is desirable.
• Formal or informal training which provides the ability to read and write at a level
necessary for successful job performance.
C. Knowledge of:
• Materials, disinfectants, equipment and methods used in custodial work.
D. Ability to:
• Learn to use cleaning equipment and materials with skill and efficiency.
• Learn to use tools in minor maintenance work.
• Learn safe work practices.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Work effectively in the absence of supervision.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the
course of work.
III. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession of an appropriate California motor vehicle operator’s license.
• In order to conform with CAL-OSHA, AHERA, all custodians are required to be fitted for
respirators as a condition of initial and/or continued employment.
• For designated Pool Operators only: possess, and/or obtain within six months of hire/transfer,
a Certified Pool Operator Certificate, if designated by the District.
IV. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION: duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Sweep, mop and wash floors, vacuum and clean rugs and carpets.
• Dust, wash and polish furniture and woodwork, and polish metalwork.
• Empty and clean waste receptacles.
• Clean erasers and blackboards, and empty pencil sharpeners.
• Clean grounds and courts of buildings along with other outdoor areas.
• Clean drinking fountains.
• Make minor, non-technical repairs including replacing light bulbs and fluorescent light tubes,
replacing audio-visual equipment lights.
• Lock doors and windows, and maintain tight security of school property at all times.
• Observe assigned areas to prevent vandalism.
• Report needed repairs to immediate supervisor.
• Assist in moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment for special events and
meetings. May oversee building use permits.
• Order custodial supplies for the assigned site.
• Raise school flags.
• Clean lunch tables and adjacent areas.
• For designated Pool Operators only: pool maintenance, documentation related to pool
maintenance, and assist with compliance checks.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: of this position are, but not limited to
the following:
NP = Not present; Rare - 0 to 1/12 of the time (40 minutes of an 8 hour day); Occasional = 1/12 to 1/3 of the
time (or 2-1/2 hours of an 8 hour day); FREQUENT = 1/3 to 2/3 of the time (or 5+ hours of an 8 hour day);
Continuous = 2/3 to 3/3 of the time (or 8 hours of the day).
Standing/Walking Continuous physical demand as associated with all aspects of custodial and janitorial activities.
Sitting Not required.
Lifting 50-60 lbs. on occasion as required when lifting containers of refuge and dumping it into
the proper storage areas. More frequently, 10-15 lbs. associated with small trash bags,
trash containers, filters, supplies, equipment, etc.
Carrying Occasional 50-60 lbs. as required when carrying larger containers of trash from
distances ranging from a few feet up to 30-40 feet. More frequent carrying would involve
a few lbs. up to 10-15 lbs. associated with smaller tools, equipment, filters, smaller trash
containers, etc.
Bending/Stooping/
Crouching/Squatting Frequent physical demand as required when performing various cleaning activities at or near ground level.
Climbing As required when utilizing stepladders in order to gain access to overhead lighting to change light bulbs and clean fixtures.
Balancing As required when climbing ladders performing light bulb changes.
Turning/Twisting Frequent physical demand associated with the neck, wrist, elbow, shoulder, torso, legs
and knees. This is required as when cleaning in various positions in which the worker may work from left to right and vice-versa.
Crawling Rare physical demand, however, the custodian may be required to crawl on hands and knees at times to perform special spotting, picking up gum from the floor, reaching under tables, desks, etc. for cleaning purposes.
Kneeling Occasional physical demand as required when cleaning baseboards, walls, etc. near or at ground level.
Reaching Occasional physical demand involving overhead reaching as required when
cleaning head height to above associated with chalk boards, changing overhead lights,
filters, blinds, etc.
Frequent physical demand involving chest to waist level reaching as
required when cleaning walls, chalkboards, desks, etc.
Occasional to Frequent physical demand associated with ground level
reaching when cleaning near or at ground level including baseboards, walls, floors, etc.
Pushing/Pulling Frequent pushing and pulling is required when operating a vacuum cleaner and pushing
the wand with suction device over the carpets, floors, etc. In addition, pushing and
pulling would involve operating a broom, dust mop, and wet mop. The custodian has a
custodial cart which weighs 50 lbs. and the custodian is required to push this to various
classrooms, up ramps, over thresholds, etc.

Fingering/
Grasping Continuous physical demand as required when performing various cleaning
activities using brushes, rags, mops, brooms, vacuums, etc.
Talking/Hearing Required in order to communicate with co-workers and students.
Vision As required, adequately perform cleaning duties and insure that the areas
have been properly cleaned.
Production
Expectations The custodian has a nightly work sheet, which involves classrooms, bathrooms,
and other assigned areas, which he/she is expected to complete in a regular 8-hour shift.
Environmental Conditions
Work Environment 95% indoors, 5% outdoors
Temperature Controlled indoors. Variable temperature outdoors, as the custodian moves from room to room.
Chemicals Cleaning agents such as citric acid, cleanser, muriatic acid, floor stripper,
disinfectants, and window cleaner.
Noise/ Vibrations Usually working after hours, in a quiet environment. Moderate noise from vacuum
cleaner or floor buffer.
Fumes/Gases/Odors Occasional exposure to fumes from the above indicated cleaning agents.
Humidity Temperature controlled indoors, variable outdoors.
Dust Moderate dust exposure when dust mopping classroom floors and dusting shelves and ledges.
Working Surfaces Tile, carpet and concrete.
Hazards Possible hazards might include ladder work, slipping on a wet floor and possible skin irritation from splashing muriatic acid solution or other cleaning chemicals
on one’s skin or face.

VI. SUPERVISION:
Under the immediate direction of the Custodian Supervisor.
VII. EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Atascadero Unified
School District and the California School Employees’ Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
