FOR THIS TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT, STATE LAW REQUIRES A NATIONAL AND STATE CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK AND HAVE A LETTER, PROVIDED BY THE INDIVIDUAL, FROM THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES STATING THE EMPLOYEE IS CLEAR TO HIRE BASED ON NO FINDINGS OF SUBSTANTIATED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT FOUND THROUGH A BACKGROUND CHECK OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT RECORDS MAINTAINED BY THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent
    and
Must verify:
  •  Completion of at least two years of study at an institution of higher education
      or
  •   Minimum of two years' experience working with individuals with disabilities
     or
  •   Meet a rigorous standard of quality through a formal state or local academic assessment.
    • Must meet the requirements of a criminal record check as specified by Kentucky State Law
    • Must meet health requirements as specified in the district personnel policy
    • Have knowledge of jobs in the community
    • Good written and oral communication skills 
    • Knowledge of the OVR resources in the district's area

The Employment Specialist is an employee of the Christian County Public School System and works under the direct supervision of the Director of Special Education or designee.  Candidates should be self-motivated, flexible, and resourceful people, and possess high expectations for the inclusion of students with disabilities within the workforce.  The job also requires strong verbal, written, and organizational skills, knowledge of working with individuals with disabilities, and knowledge of the local business community.  The Employment Specialist must attend all required meetings and trainings.  Experience and knowledge in the areas of high school special education, working with businesses, and training individuals with disabilities are preferred.
 
 Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Understands the goals of the program
  2. Is required to work with students with mild to severe disabilities
  3. Works with students, family members, classroom teachers, businesses, and others to expose students to job possibilities and resources in the local community
  4. Instructs students in learning about the impact of his/her disability and related support needs in the community
  5. Attends and actively participates in Admissions and Release Committee meetings for students involved in the program
  6.  Advocates and consults with business personnel to promote future employment for students with disabilities
  7. Maintains necessary records for the local school system and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.  Keeps current and complete information regarding each student involved in the program.  Turns in ALL required paperwork including monthly reports, billing statements, and year-end program data for appropriate services and reimbursement
  8. Coordinates and provides transportation according to district requirements
