JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:  TEACHER OF THE DEAF/HARD OF HEARING

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Special Education certification in Missouri in K-12 Deaf/Hearing Impaired required

  2. Baccalaureate Degree or higher in Education

 

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal and/or Executive Director of Special Services

JOB GOAL: Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with hearing loss in an educational setting. The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing collaborates with students, teachers, families, and other professionals to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs).  Support instructional programing, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living, delivering group and individual student instruction, and ensure that students with hearing loss have equal access to the curriculum, develop language and communication skills, and achieve their educational goals. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences. 

  2. Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) in collaboration with the IEP team, setting appropriate goals and objectives for students with hearing loss. 

  3. Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs. 

  4. Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement. 

  5. Maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures including electronic formats. 

  6. Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process. 

  7. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis. 

  8. Collaborates with peers to enhance the instruction environment. 

  9. Models professional and ethical standards 

  10. Ensures that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification. 

  11. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and school staff. 

  12. Supports classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.

  13. Participates in training opportunities as established by building principal.

  14. Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: following meeting protocol, honoring schedules, meeting collaborative assignment deadlines. 

  15. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.  All work responsibilities are subject to having performance goals and/or targets established as part of the teacher evaluation process. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Ability to move around in the instructional area.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Base annual contract of nine months as per approved school calendar; compensation as per adopted salary schedule. 

TYPE OF POSITION:  Exempt

EVALUATION: Annually by their building administrator.
