POSITION TITLE:   Teacher (Middle and High School)


REPORTS TO:        Principal



JOB GOAL:             


To create a flexible education program and class environment that’s favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils: to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each pupil’s ability; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities. (Other duties may be assigned)


  1. Teaches district approved curriculum and utilizes the district’s instructional delivery model.


  1. Creates a classroom environment which is conducive to learning, developmentally appropriate, and promotes the interests of the students.


  1. Prepares for classes assigned and provides instruction which meets the needs of students based on the Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS).


  1. Develops lesson plans and utilizes the district’s lesson plan template, and provides individualized and small group instruction.


  1. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals --and in harmony with the goals—establishes clear objectives for all lesson units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.


  1. Translates lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences, and utilizes a variety of instructional techniques, materials, and media.


  1. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner in order to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.


  1. Evaluates pupil’s academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports and report cards as scheduled by the school district.


  1. Identifies pupil needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual education plans.


  1. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.


  1. Communicates regularly with parents outside of the normal classroom day by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.


  1. Creates an environment for learning through current bulletin board displays, learning centers, and exhibits of student’s work.


  1. Plans and coordinates the work of an assistant teacher if assigned.


  1. Supervises student teacher if assigned and provides sound advice and suggestions to assist him or her into becoming a successful teacher.


  1. Closely supervises pupils on playground.


  1. Supervises pupils to and from cafeteria, auditorium, and in the hallways during the changing of classes.


  1. Is knowledgeable of the district’s evaluation instrument and utilizes the descriptions and indicators in an attempt to become a district master teacher.


  1. Attends staff development sessions as scheduled by the district’s central office staff.


  1. LENGTH OF SCHOOL DAY: Teachers are expected to clock in at their respective schools on or before 7:30 a.m. each school day including the days they are assigned early duty.  Early duty reporting time is to be designated by the principal of each school in accordance with the need for student supervision.  It is expected that all teachers remain at their respective schools Monday through Friday until 3:30 p.m. unless the teacher has late duty and there is a need for supervision after 3:30 p.m. Teachers are expected to attend all scheduled professional development sessions.


  1. Punctuality is expected. Teachers will be held to the District’s Tardy Policy.


  1. Teachers must clock in and out at the appropriate scheduled times.


  1. Teachers must obtain administrative permission to leave the building during the work day.


  1. Teachers will not leave the campus for lunch.


  1. Shall participate in all state testing in their buildings and will adhere to all guidelines and regulations as mandated by the state and district.


  1. Teachers must adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics.


  1. Teachers are to perform all essential duties and responsibilities, as well as other duties which may be assigned.




Supervises classroom, students, volunteers, and assistant teachers.

Bachelor degree certified in teaching area.




Valid Mississippi Teaching certificate




Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondences, and memos. Ability to use grammatically correct speech, which is clear and concise, both in oral and written communication. 




Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inferences, averages, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.




Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.




Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in their respective field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and school community.  Ability to perform duties in alignment with the Board of Education and state policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs. such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts.  The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, and the work output of other people.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed materials, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoor and occasionally outdoors.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:        Teachers are contracted for 187 days. Salary will be considerate of MDE salary scale and years of experience and work year to be established by the Board.


EVALUATIONS:                              Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
