Job Summary
Under the direction and supervisor of the Aquatics Coordinator, Lifeguard & Swim Instructors are responsible for watching their assigned zone according to the 10/20 rule of protection. Lifeguard & Swim Instructors are responsible for keeping their rescue skills at test-ready levels at all times on duty. Lifeguard & Swim Instructors are also responsible for organizing and teaching swimming classes to children of various ages. This is a part-time position that will work no more than 19 hours per week with hours possible 7 days per week. This is an at-will position.

Hiring for all shifts including -
Life Guard Opening Shift - 5:00-10:30 AM - rate is $16.00 per hour
Life Guard Other shifts available - rate for other shifts is $15.00 per hour
Swim Instructors - rate is $16.00 per hour
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must be a responsible individual.
- Employee must be patient, enthusiastic, and creative.
- Employee must be able to effectively communicate with participants, their parents and their supervisor.
- Must be able to swim efficiently.
- Must have at least 20/30 correctable vision.
- All lifeguard positions are contingent upon completion of the StarGuard Lifeguarding program and maintaining a certification as a lifeguard.
- Employee must attend a swim lesson in-service before teaching.
- Must be CPR certified within six (6) months of hiring.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Lifeguard Duties:
- Employee is responsible for maintaining 10/20 scanning of their zone of the pool area to ensure patrons safety and supervision at all times.
- Employee will attend at least four (4) hours of in-service per month. Failure to do so will result in suspension of the individual lifeguard certification until the required in-service hours are fulfilled.
- Employee must perform rescues and/or CPR with a high level of skill mastery.
- Employee must inspect lifeguard equipment to ensure it is in good working order.
- Employee must assist in facility evacuations and/or crowd control for tornado warnings, fire alarms and EMS assistance.
- Employee will perform and document pool readings
- Employee is responsible for wearing corrective eye ware as needed to maintain 20/30 binocular vision.
Swim Instructor Duties:
- Employee must attend all class sessions unless an acceptable substitute has been found and approved by the Pool Manager.
- Employee will teach all appropriate skills to students in the appropriate order.
- Employee will test and create report cards for each student at the end of the session.
- Employee will make sure all children are supervised and safe at all times on the pool deck.
- Employee will prepare daily lesson plans and gather the needed equipment before the class starts.
- Employee will make sure all equipment is put away after each class.
- Employee will clean the pool deck as necessary or as directed by Aquatics Coordinator.
General Duties:
- Employee will consistently and politely enforce pool rules.
- Employee will clean the pool deck, office and the whirlpool daily as well as complete any needed cleaning/maintenance as directed by the Pool Manager.
- Employee will anticipate, recognize and react to aquatic and to non-aquatic emergencies.
- Employee will enforce safety rules at aquatic facilities.
- Employee is responsible for providing first aid to patrons while on duty and while on break.
- Employee will report all problems to Aquatics Coordinator.
- Employee must demonstrate ability to create a positive and controlled learning environment.
- Employee will participate in pool rentals.
- Employee may be required to oversee Splash Pad rental parties with duties including, but not limited to:
- Ensure all guests adhere to all park policies
- Prevent unauthorized patrons from entering the Splash Pad or Thoroughbred Shelter.
- Issue wristbands to authorized patrons.
- Remain at Sunny Hill during duration of party.
- Assist patrons with guidance and questions, but leave decorating, serving food and clean-up to the renter.
- Employee must help set up for programs and special events.
- Employee must provide customer service to patrons by giving information regarding aquatic facilities, pricing and programs.
- Employee must maintain a commitment to the operation of safe and effective aquatic environment.
- Employee must maintain a professional attitude.
- Employee must adhere to Park District policies and procedures as outlined in the Pool Manual and the Part-Time and Seasonal Personnel Policies Manual.
- Employee must perform all other duties as assigned and/or needed.

- Employee is responsible for keeping organized records and reports.
- Employee should realize that they may witness and have to care for severe injuries, unconsciousness or even death while on duty.
- Employee must use good safety judgment and awareness for self and participants at all times.
- Employee must be able to perform and teach all skills for the level being taught.
- Employee must be able to follow directions and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.

- Employee must be able to effectively communicate with swimmers, lifeguards, Aquatics Coordinator, pool managers, and EMS personal in high pressure water or land emergencies.

- Employee must be able to work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction of the Pool Manager and Aquatic Coordinator.

- Employee must be able to propel themselves through the water with the rescue tube.
- Employee must be able to perform rescue techniques on individuals that may be larger than the lifeguard.
