Special Education Teacher (Full-time)

The special education teacher is responsible for all aspects of the special education program, including instruction, documentation, assessment and meeting presentations.   The special education teacher works closely with classroom teachers, case managers, the special education director and other staff to coordinate students’ programs of instruction.  The special education teacher will display awareness of and the ability to work with the unique cultural diversity that exists in the Southwest.


  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education; Arizona Secondary Teacher Certification in Special Education required

  • Minimum one year teaching experience at the secondary level preferred

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Thorough knowledge of assigned instructional areas
  • Thorough knowledge of special education law and procedures
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card


  • Models the character traits of respect, responsibility, caring, trust, fairness and citizenship
  • Respects and incorporates the benefits of cultural diversity in the school
  • Orders and reviews special education records in a timely manner
  • Maintains current, organized special education files
  • Alerts the special education director to potential problems/compliance issues
  • Meets weekly with the special education director prepared to discuss appropriate records and updates
  • Maintains current special education and 504 rosters and submits such to the office as needed
  • Prepares appropriate records for IEP and 3-year re-evaluation meetings
  • Administers standardized academic assessments
  • Documents academic and behavioral information in the student academic file
  • Communicates all changes/documentation to the classroom teacher
  • Submits quarterly progress reports for all special education students in a timely manner
  • Upholds the confidentiality practices and laws related to  special education
  • Develops, maintains and revises, as needed, special education curriculum
  • Provides modified curricula as needed
  • Oversees course assignments and overall work habits of special education students
  • Provides itinerant special education services to students at outlying sites
  • Consults with regular education staff regarding special education and modified curriculum

  • Provides instruction in accordance with IEPS
  • Manages and assigns curriculum according to Edge instructional model
  • Utilizes a variety of modalities including technology to address different learning styles
