POSITION: SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

WELCOME TO COVINGTON INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
Substitute teachers are not employed under an employment contract as our regular part-time or full-time employees; substitute teachers work on an "as needed" basis. A substitute teacher is contracted through an automated sub-finder system called when a contract teacher is or will be absent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Hold a Kentucky teaching certificate in any subject/area or
- Hold a Kentucky substitute teacher certificate or
- Be eligible for an Emergency Substitute Certification (requirements are listed below)
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or
- Have at least sixty-four (64) semester hours of college credits with at least a 2.45 GPA
- Have a high school diploma
If you previously held a Kentucky teaching certificate that has expired or hold an out of state certification, you must apply for a Substitute Teaching Certificate through the Education Professional Standards Board. You can find more information about this at: https://kecs.education.ky.gov/.
A substitute is expected to follow the same hours of duty and fulfill the same assignments as the regular teacher. The substitute will continue to report for duty until relieved by the principal. Substitute teachers shall follow daily lesson plans as outlined by the regular teacher and leave a written record of the work completed during their length of duty.
When screening applications and hiring substitutes we are required to hire candidates holding a Kentucky teaching certificate before hiring those that would be emergency certified.
Salary:
Rank I – III: $174/daily
Rank IV: $167/daily
Rank V: $162/daily
When filling a long-term position, beginning on the 21st consecutive day substitutes may be eligible to receive pay based on rank and experience if requirements are met. Anyone who retired from TRS is required to submit a Daily Wage Threshold (DWT) letter for the current year upon being hired. Contact Teacher's Retirement System at 1-800-618-1687 to request DWTs.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHER POSITION DESCRIPTION
Substitute teachers carry out job duties in place of the regular certified teacher. Performance responsibilities of a certified teacher are as follows:
- Plans lessons and chooses instructional materials based on curriculum and needs of students.
- Uses a variety of instructional techniques to meet the diverse needs of their students.
- Works toward implementing the instructional programs as established through guidelines provided by the district and state.
- Manages time wisely to make the greatest use of time for student instruction.
- Creates and maintains an atmosphere with consistent standards in the classroom that is conducive to learning.
- Collaborate with other teachers and contribute as a member of school and district professional learning communities.
- Evaluates academic performance and progress of students regularly.
- Communicates student performance and progress to parents and guardians following school and district guidelines.
- Work with all school staff to meet and identify the needs of individual students.
- Participate in professional development and follow guidelines and accommodations for students with special needs.
- Work with principals and others to obtain and practice professional growth opportunities.
- Practice and supports safety of students during drills and emergencies.
- Maintains updated inventory records of classroom material and follows guidelines in appropriation of supplies needed for the instructional program.
- Supervises students during school and school sponsored activities or events.
- Administers student diagnostic, achievement, and other tests and assessments following district and state testing guidelines and regulations.
- Plays an active role in developing and implementing curriculum related to standards.
- Inputs, calculates, and maintains all necessary records according to state law, district policy and administrative regulations.
- Accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others.
- Adheres to professional code of ethics for certified personnel and all board policies.
- Participate in peer reviews and teacher leadership activities.
- Integrates technology and supplemental materials to support curriculum.
Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal may assign.
