Requirements: * Colorado teaching license with an appropriate content area endorsement required. * Additional endorsement in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education preferred (or willingness to pursue endorsement or equivalent coursework). * Dual-endorsement science and mathematics (or other dual-endorsement) preferred.
To help students in their academic and social development, and to help them become mature, able, knowledgeable and responsible individuals who have the skills and passions to be successful life-long learners.
Under the general guidance of the school director, and in conjunction with the staff, an advisor helps students learn to lead successful lives. Advisors create and support individualized learning plans that encompass students’ interests and passions and stand as educationally sound documents aligned to state and local standards.
In addition to their advising duties, advisors teach classes in their content area to a diverse group of students using research-based best-practice and incorporating the explicit instruction and application of college readiness skills and practices.
Finally, the advisor's job is to create a safe, trusting space in which students are allowed to contribute positively to the school community and to grow and work on a daily basis.
Advisor Distinguishing Characteristics:
Each advisor is responsible for 18-20 students within his or her advisory. Advisors meet with their advisory on a daily basis to build community and develop and support academic and personal goals. Advisors are responsible for the facilitation of parent, student and mentor meetings, and for measuring the progress of each student - with regard to personal goals and educational standards - as each student progresses through the year. The advisor is also responsible for internship placement and internship support for each student in his/her advisory (students at MEC attend interest-based internships once per week). Because strong student-advisor relationships are at the heart of the position, each advisor loops with their advisory over a two-year period.
In addition to their advising duties, advisors also teach classes to a diverse group of students in their content area, using research-based best-practice and incorporating the explicit instruction and application of college readiness skills and practices. Advisors collaborate extensively with their grade-level teams and with MEC's Internship Coordinator, Instructional Guide, and Director in each area of responsibility.
Advisor Professional Responsibilities: * Teach classes/rotations in his/her content area/academic subject, employing best practice to ensure success and learning of all students. * Support all students in his/her advisory in their learning in all content areas as well as in their personal qualities/character growth and goals. * Support school culture of community and personal accountability, including Restorative Practices and Restorative Justice. * Know his/her students well and be willing to develop strong relationships with each student. * Develop meaningful, appropriate relationships with each student and his/her parent/guardian. * Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside of the traditional prescribed times and days. * Fine-tune student learning plans two (2) – three (3) times per year. * Facilitate two (2) – three (3) learning plan meetings with each family or guardian per year. * Facilitate two (2) – three (3) student exhibitions for each student per year. * Strive to implement, by instruction and action, MEC's unique hybrid of the Big Picture Learning philosophy of education and an Early College program and curriculum. * Know and understand the Big Picture Learning Goals and how they align to Colorado/Mapleton Public Schools content area standards. * Celebrate student accomplishment and hold students accountable to standards of specific grade, advisory, campus and school behavioral standards. * Advocate for, and on behalf of, students and families. * Forecast educational needs of each student. * Plan a program of instruction that is both challenging and that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each advisee. * Ensure that each student has an internship. * Facilitate internship searches using phone calls, shadow days, informational interviews and other available means * Monitor student internships through site-visits (weekly), phone calls weekly, and monthly mentor meetings. * Explicitly state each student's progress, educationally and socially, through semester narratives, regular phone-calls to parents, weekly student meetings, and use of school's designated online system. * Run at least one advisory meeting per day. * Attend weekly staff meetings, initial rookie training session, weekly grade-level meetings, and bi-weekly professional development. * Collaborate effectively with colleagues, parents, and internship mentors. * Facilitate additional educational/health services for each advisee as needed. * Mediate student conflict to the best of advisor's ability. * Maintain accurate, complete, and factual records (transcripts) on each student as required by the school and law. * Employ a variety of educational techniques in pursuit of educative goals and establish clearobjectives for each student. * Work with school team on strategies for grade level, campus and team-level improvements. * Provide supplemental and educational resources in order to support student growth. * Facilitate student learning outside of the school building via camping, museum trips, outdoor leadership excursions and other experiences. * Identify learning opportunities and internships for students. * Ensure that each student employs materials prescribed by the school (individual learning plans, weekly check-in sheets, journals). * Strive to improve professional competence.
Advisor Knowledge and Abilities: * Basic knowledge of all teaching subjects and a specialty in one (or more) areas of teaching areas of endorsement * Basic knowledge of pedagogical theories, perspectives and developments * Basic classroom management skills * Good oral and verbal communication skills * Ability to improvise and work through uncertainties
Advisor Education and Experiential Requirements: * Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree * Appropriate State or Colorado Teaching Certificate(s) * Life experience * Excellent problem-solving skills
