School Crossing Guard

Position Function
         Under direct supervision of the Building Principal to ensure the safety of students and pedistrians when crossing street intersections and roadways. Provide a safe adult presence for students while going to and from school
 
Essential Functions
         Provides for the safety and security of students, staff and other pedestrians in accordance with School District policies when crossing roadways and intersections
         Directing vehicular and pedistrian traffic utilizing training and procedures
         Direct students and pedestrians when it is safe to cross and when should wait
        Monitor and report any unusual or strange behavior or events to the safety team/Principal
        Put traffic signs at established locations at the start of their duty and remove them as their duty ends
•       Wears District provided safety vest to ensure easy visibility by drivers/students
        Notify school authorities about traffic risks and hazards, including school zones that are not adequately marked and monitored
        Using appropriate signs, lanterns, hand signals and flags, they direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and warn them of existing dangers
        Escort children in marked crosswalks when necessay
        Interact with students and families in a positive way

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
         Knowledge of best practices in building security and safety.
         Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and codes related to building safety and security, including OSHA, and Electronic Surveillance laws.
         Knowledge of security and alarm systems, electronic surveillance, and related safety and security devices.
         Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal, security guards and others.
         Ability to describe orally or in writing security problems as needed.
         Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
         Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
         Ability to maintain a professional, calm and authoritative manner when challenged by students.
 
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

          To perform this job successfully, an individual must be physically able to walk to the center of the street at the crossing location and to hold up the stop sign in one hand so that it is visible to traffic, while using the other hand to signal students to stop or proceed
         Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow
         Abilitty to read printed materials, license plate and traffic lights
         Ability to hear and speak to commicate in person

  
Qualifications Profile:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • Must have in depth understanding not only of traffic signals but traffic patterns and behavior as well.
  • Must meet all state or federal requirements, as well as successfully pass a background check, physical and TB test
  • Should know basic safety procedures and  practices relevant to the job of school crossing guard
  • Know how to use good judgment as they interact with children
  • Experience working with adolescents preferred
  • Training will be provided
 
 
FLSA Status:             Non-exempt
 
Schedule
Works approximately 2 hours per day, Monday through Friday during the school year (August - June)
Hours  7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to  3:00 p.m. every day of student attendance
