SUMMARY
This position combines the roles of executive director and principal to lead a K-6 public charter school in fulfilling its mission to create a dynamic learning environment where students develop a love of learning through self-critique and self-motivation. The Executive Director serves as the school’s chief administrator, responsible for academic leadership, fiscal management, community engagement, and overall organizational success.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Leadership - ensure high-quality, standards-based teaching and measurable student growth. ? Improvement Leadership - oversee curriculum, professional development, and teacher evaluation to promote a culture of continuous improvement ? Federal and State Level Compliance - ensure compliance with state and federal education laws, charter authorizer requirements, and all reporting deadlines ? Fiscal Management - manage the school’s budget, finances, and operations to ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability. ? Faculty and Staff Management - supervise and support all staff, fostering a positive, collaborative, and student-centered work culture. ? Oversee Special Programs - oversee special education, English learner, and intervention programs to ensure equitable access and compliance. ? Build School Community Relationships - build strong relationships with families, staff, community partners, and the Board of Directors. ? Long-Range Planning - lead long-range planning and data-driven improvement efforts aligned with the school’s mission and goals ? Grant Management - Write, report, and manage grants to secure additional funding for academic programs, technology, and professional development initiatives. ? Public Relations - Serve as the public representative of the school, communicating effectively with stakeholders and the broader community.
JOB DUTIES: PRINCIPAL ? Instructional Leadership and Student Achievement ? Lead curriculum planning, alignment, and continuous improvement for K-6 ? Ensure standards-based instruction and developmentally appropriate practices). ? Implement data-driven systems for monitoring student learning and using assessment to inform instruction. ? Support teacher professional growth: lead/co-design professional development, coaching, and evaluation processes. ? Promote equitable access to high-quality instruction for all students (including ML and economically disadvantaged learners). ? Student Services ? With assistance of the Special Education and Student Success Team Coordinators, oversee special education and 504 compliance (IEP development, timelines, and service delivery). ? Ensure services for Multi-lingual Learners, counseling, health and other student supports are implemented effectively. ? Maintain student records and privacy in accordance with FERPA and state law. ? Collaborate with Lunch Manager to ensure implementation of the Child Nutrition Program ? Human Resources and Staff Management ? Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate all staff ? Cultivate a positive culture and retention strategies ? In collaboration with the Executive Director, create clear roles, performance expectations, and professional development plans. ? Community, Family, and Stakeholder Relations ? Act as the public face of the school ? Build relationships with families, community partners, local government, and media. ? Implement effective family engagement and communication systems (newsletters, meetings, conflict resolution, APTT nights, Fall Festival, Winter Concert, and Literacy Festival ? Safety, Health, and Crisis Management ? In collaboration with the School Safety Specialist, develop, maintain, and exercise emergency plans (safety drills, crisis communication) ? In collaboration with the executive director, determine snow days/ bad weather days and communicate that with teachers, staff, and parents ? Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement ? In collaboration with the principal, develop and get approval for annual Academic School Year Calendar. ? Day-to-Day Leadership & Oversight ? Oversee daily school operations to ensure a safe, positive, and efficient learning environment. ? Supervise and support teachers, aides, and office staff. ? Conduct classroom walk-throughs and informal teacher observations (“walk-bys”) to monitor instruction and provide feedback. ? Address and manage student behavioral issues, including restorative conversations, parent communication, and disciplinary follow-up. ? Oversee the school mentoring program, ensure coverage for observations, mentor teachers as needed. ? Day-to-Day Scheduling & Staffing ? Create and maintain a Master Schedule in collaboration with department heads. ? Create and maintain aide lunch duty and recess supervision schedules. ? Develop and rotate bus duty schedules to ensure staff coverage for arrival and dismissal. ? Coordinate substitute and coverage plans for teachers and aides during absences. ? Adjust schedules as needed to meet operational and supervision demands. ? Create and maintain elective schedules in collaboration with school leaders. ? Oversee and coordinate field trip transportation and funding. ? Day-to-Day Communication & Collaboration ? Meet regularly with parents to address concerns, discuss student progress, and strengthen home-school partnerships. ? Communicate with vendors regarding supplies, services, and contracts. ? Hold routine meetings with teachers and staff to share updates, gather input, and maintain school alignment with mission and goals. ? Send a weekly memo to teachers and staff to communicate important updates and reminders. ? In collaboration with the executive director, liaise with board members, state officials, and community partners as needed. ? Day-to-Day Operational Management ? Monitor daily attendance and address truancy concerns with families. ? In collaboration with the executive director, ensure compliance with state and charter regulations. ? Oversee campus safety, including emergency drills and building maintenance needs. ? Support lunchroom operations and recess supervision. ? Handle urgent issues or crises as they arise to maintain smooth daily functioning. ? Day-to-Day Administrative Duties ? Approve purchase orders, invoices, and supply requests. ? ? Student Services ? Coordinate with contracted providers when applicable to ensure appropriate service delivery across departments. ? Charter Relationship, Compliance & Governance ? Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors and the charter authorizer ? prepare regular reports and present at board meetings. ? Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations (i.e. Utah State Board of Education rules, federal programs, reporting deadlines, etc.) ? Manage charter renewal processes, required reporting, and audits. ? Fiscal and Operational Management ? Develop and administer the annual budget; monitor cash flow and fiscal health; report financial status to the Board, with support of contracted providers. ? Oversee procurement, payroll, benefits, and grants; ensure internal controls and audit readiness. ? Oversee facilities, safety, transportation, technology, and custodial services to ensure a safe, functional learning environment. ? Ensure accurate and timely staff contracts, licensure verification, and compliance with employment laws. ? Establish measurable goals, performance indicators, and annual improvement plans; report progress to the Board. ? Research and identify federal, state, and private grant opportunities that align with the school’s mission and strategic goals. ? Write, submit, and manage grant proposals to secure additional funding for academic programs, technology, professional development, and facility improvements. ? Develop and maintain a comprehensive grants calendar to ensure timely submission, reporting, and renewal of all active grants. ? Oversee accurate data collection and documentation required for grant compliance and audits. ? Collaborate with teachers, staff, and the Board to identify funding priorities and ensure grant-funded initiatives are implemented effectively. ? Prepare and submit required progress reports, financial updates, and final summaries to funding agencies. ? Monitor and evaluate the impact of grant-funded programs and communicate outcomes to stakeholders. ? Cultivate partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and donors to expand funding opportunities ? Day-to-Day Operational Support ?
