Bus Driver

 

Position Description

SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

1.

Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.

2.

Operates school bus under all types of weather conditions.

3.

Transports students and other authorized persons on school routes in regular, special education, vocational or extracurricular trips as authorized by the Transportation Department.

4.

Successfully completes any school bus driver training programs and courses as prescribed by the State of Georgia and the Gainesville Board of Education.

5.

Operates the vehicle in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with the laws of the State of Georgia and the policies of the Georgia and Gainesville City Boards of Education and the procedures of the Transportation Department.

6.

Conducts thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and its special equipment.  

7.

Maintains orderly conduct of student passengers and reports unsafe acts and improper conduct to appropriate administration.

8.

Communicates effectively and professionally with school staff and public.

9.

Completes legible and accurate required reports in the prescribed manner and on a timely basis.

10.

Cleans and services the vehicle which includes sweeping, washing, fueling, etc. and reports needed repairs.

11.

Conducts emergency evacuation drills as required; provides maximum safety for passengers while on the bus and during loading and unloading; reports hazards along the existing route.

12.

Maintains route and schedule as planned.

13.

Maintains pleasant personality as well as clean and neat appearance.

14.

Maintains confidentiality.

15.

Works effectively and cooperatively with administrators, teachers and staff.

16.

Handles all duties in a timely and organized manner.

17.

Demonstrates ability to work/handle with special needs children.

18.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:    

  • Physically capable of operating any and all school buses owned by Gainesville City Schools

  • Basic literacy skills

  • Possesses or will obtain a valid CDL in either Class A or Class B with passenger, air brake and school bus endorsements

  • Pass annual physical exam by a licensed Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy within 60 days  

  • prior to the first day of school, in accordance with the approved examination (DE Form 0514) prescribed by the State Board of Education

  • Submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing as prescribed in Federal, State and Local standards

  • Be of moral character

  • Demonstrate mental and emotional stability which ensures the normal driving competency and efficiency

  • Minimum of 18 years of age

  • Minimum of 2 years driving experience 

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

                                                          moderate exposure to extreme 
                                                          temperatures and vehicle fumes.

Equipment used:

  • School bus with either manually or air operated seat or door as assigned by transportation director.
                        

REQUIRED DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Employee must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function of the position. Employees are expected to attend all required meetings as approved by the supervisor. The incumbent will adhere to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission’s Code of Ethics for Educators, all Gainesville City Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, school system procedures, and all other applicable professional performance criteria. Maintenance of criminal history check is required for all employees.
