JOB TITLE: Transportation Supervisor
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
JOB OR POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Transportation the
Routing Specialist/Dispatcher has a number of job functions including but not limited to dispatching,
routing, scheduling sub driver when needed, and providing administrative support.
Responsibilities include assisting in the planning and coordination of the pupil transportation
program, scheduling and assigning of bus driver personnel on all routes and trips, and also
interacting with the public to support in the efficient operation of the department. This position
requires independent judgment and excellent communication and organizational skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate routing system to ensure all routes and assignments are covered on a daily basis for AM, Midday, PM route coverage as well as field trips and after-hours transportation.
- Maintain bus routes and student data in routing program; monitor, analyze, update and ensure the accuracy of all system data.
- Plan, schedule, coordinate and assign in and out-of-district routes, monitor arrival and departure times of regular drivers
- Assist the supervisor in responding to emergency situations for the purpose of ensuring the safety of students, staff and equipment
- Work with parents and school district personnel to implement individual route andschedule changes
- Respond to parent and student transportation questions
- Prepare maps and instructions for extracurricular trips
- Advise buildings/schools of bus and/or route changes, delays and emergencies
- Communicate with driver regarding essential information such as student healthconcerns, routes, emergencies, and other information as appropriate
- Answer telephones, responds to inquiries, Assist with general office functions and processes, prepares correspondence and documents,
- Provide accurate verbal and written communications through two-way radios and telephone with bus drivers, mechanics, district staff and community during emergencies and non-emergency situations.
- Communicate with mechanics for appropriate equipment assignment
- Assists with other related clerical duties such as photocopying, faxing, filing and collating
- Work effectively as a team member within the department, building and across the district
- Maintain proper records as required by the State and school district
- Maintain and protect confidential reports and personnel records
- Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality regarding student and personnel information
- Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality and have consistent, reliable attendance
- Comply with all district policies and procedures
- Perform additional related duties as may be required or assigned
- Knowledge and skills applicable to transportation computer routing software or a strong IT background
- Understanding of applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations related to pupil transportation
- Skills in the areas of organization, attention to detail, filing, problem solving, and commitment to follow through on tasks
- Skills that exemplify high level of computer proficiency and application of technology (including data mining, creating data reports from multiple sources, proficient in Excel MS Word, MS Publisher)
- Ability to communicate specifically with drivers via two-way radio regarding routes, emergencies and student issues
- Ability to maintain flexible work hours as needed
- Ability to follow established district procedures, collective bargaining agreements, and process transportation employee hours and leave forms daily
- Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner both orally and in writing
- Ability to work as part of a team and continue learning through professional development
- Ability to handle confidential matters in an ethical manner
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively with staff and public
- Ability to produce and maintain accurate records

LICENSING/CREDENTIAL AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Completion of high school or equivalent, degree preferred. Additional pupil transportation education preferred and technical training in the area of transportation routing software and MS-Office
- Experience with Power School data network systems and/or other data system, routing software, Versa Trans preferred and/or willingness to be trained
- Ability to pass a state and federal criminal background check
- Valid Indiana Drivers License, Class B CDL preferred but not required.
