The position of a bus driver in Hillsborough County is not just to drive a bus. It is to become a customer service representative of the District and serve as a positive influence in the life of its students.

Each school day, more than 90,000 Hillsborough County students board school buses to travel to and from school. The yellow bus is an icon of public education and far more than just a ride. In truth, it provides a gateway to education for students all over the county that otherwise would not get to and from school.

Benefits
- Pay Rate: $14.57 per hour

Qualifications
- Must have a 10th grade education or higher
- Must have at least five years of licensed driving experience, not to include time with a learners permit.
- Must have and maintain a working telephone number.

Responsibilities (Includes and is not limited to the following:)
- Follows a designated route and an established time schedule while picking up students and dropping them off at specific locations on a printed route.
- Observes all state, city, and local traffic laws and regulations, use all signals, and ensure that all traffic is stopped before loading and unloading students.
-Instructs students on proper safety methods to board and depart from the bus and see that these instructions are carefully observed.
- Maintains order on the bus at all times and stops any disruptive behavior by following district policies, procedures, and protocols.

Other Considerations

- The Transportation Department will request you to obtain a copy of your 20 YEAR driving record from the State of Florida to determine acceptability.  
- Must have an acceptable 20-year driving record.  To obtain your FL Driving record -->   FLORIDA DMV LINK

Additional Information

  • Must Possess a valid C.D.L. license or a Phase I permit
    • Phase I - Obtain driver manual to study for written test that consists of:
      • General knowledge
      • Passenger Endorsement
      • School Bus endorsement
      • Air Brake Endorsement
  • A CDL Phase 1 class B permit will be provided by the applicant before the interview. This can be obtained at any driver's license office by completing the general knowledge, air brake, school bus and passenger
    endorsement written test. The CDL Class B Phase II is provided by the Transportation Department after training is completed.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record for the past 20 years. The Transportation Department will request you to obtain a copy of your 20 YEAR driving record from the State of
    Florida to determine acceptability. You will also be required to furnish your driving histories from all states or countries in which you have held a driver's license for the past 20 years.
