GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Assists the transportation manager and head mechanic in maintaining all board owned vehicles in safe operating condition and ensures an effective, workable school transportation system by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs preventative maintenance and repair work on board owned vehicles in accordance with accepted standards for mechanical work.

  • Assists in starting buses each morning.

  • Drives a school bus, with students on board when necessary.

  • Keeps shop and tools in clean working order.

  • Maintains inventory of tools and parts in stock.

  • Communicates with the transportation manager or head mechanic regarding replacement needs.

  • Provides a safe and secure school environment.

  • Maintains good relationship with contractors, vendors and service personnel.

  • Assists other school staff members in any reasonable way, to ensure a safe and efficient school operation.

  • Assumes responsibility of maintaining up to date knowledge of technology utilized by the district.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must be able to use appropriate equipment (i.e. engine diagnostic both diesel and gas, all related test equipment, air jacks, hoists and all other field related tools). Extensive experience in repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and diesel engine, particularly truck is required.  Must be able to diagnose electrical problems and perform required repairs.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to read, write and comprehend simple directions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administration.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, agencies, teachers or members of the school community. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, students and administrators.  

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Maintains applicable and licenses.  Current drivers license is required.    

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must possess basic skills in reading, writing and math for the purpose of making necessary measurements, reading of gauges and instruments, mixing chemicals or other related items as applicable.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations that may arise. Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.  Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to use computers where applicable. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

Schedule may vary depending on inclement weather, vehicle breakdown or any emergency situation as deemed by the transportation manager.
