Galapagos Rockford Charter School (GRCS) is a college-preparatory K-8 public charter school, serving the children of Rockford, Illinois, which is the county seat of Winnebago County, located on both banks of the Rock River in upper northern Illinois. GRCS is focused on preparing its scholars to become responsible, productive, college-educated adults, capable of adapting and prospering in a changing global economy. Galapagos Rockford uses data-driven instruction to target the learning needs of each scholar to ensure that no scholar is marginalized and each scholar is achieving academic growth at an accelerated rate. During an extended school day, Galapagos Rockford implements a rigorous curriculum in math, reading, language arts, science, social studies, wellness and fine arts. GRCS was founded in 2009 and was the first charter school in the city. Since that time, Galapagos scholars have performed at levels above the other charter schools in the city. The goal at Galapagos is to become the top performing school in the city. GRCS is a non-selective school, meaning that children do not need to test into the school. In fact, the focus of Galapagos is to service children who may not have been best served in other schools. In some cases, this means that the child is behind, in other cases, this means that the child is not being challenged and requires more rigorous work. Galapagos is proud to have served the community for eight years and invites all families to consider Galapagos for their children. GRCS has two school buildings to serve our growing scholar population. Galapagos Rockford Charter School believes in providing rigorous instruction for all scholars, based on common grade level standards. Instructors use research-based practices and standards aligned curriculum to ensure that scholars are learning what is necessary for success in college and beyond. In addition to grade level instruction based on standards, all GRCS instructors use data from classroom-based and standardized assessments to ensure scholar’s individual needs are met. All scholars, regardless of their achievement level, receive small group reading instruction targeted to their needs. Every subject area is guided by a clear set of standards that ensure scholars are mastering content and receiving equal instruction designed to both challenge them and meet their personal needs.
Galapagos Charter Schools operates elementary college prep public charter schools with the mission of preparing scholars to be responsible, productive, college-educated adults who are capable of adapting and prospering in a changing global economy.
