Description

Marvell is a small rural town in Phillips County. Like many other small towns in the Arkansas Delta, the population is declining. There are a few small businesses remaining. The 2000 census reflects a population of 1,395, a 10% decrease from the 1990 census. The population of 26, 775 in Phillips county reflects a nine percent decrease since the last census. The Major source of income in the Marvell Elaine School District area comes from the public school system and the farming operations. Marvell Elaine School District has an elementary school serving pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and a high school with grades seven through twelve. The high schools student population total about 284 students which is taught by approximately 33 certified and non-certified faculty and staff members. The student racial make-up is 87% African American, 12.3% White, and 0.4% Hispanic. The staff racial make-up is 75.8% African American and 24.2% White. Race relations within the school system are exemplary and provide a positive atmosphere in the community. In the November 2000 election, a millage increase passed which allowed the Marvell Elaine School District to build a new elementary school to replace the old one. The new physical plant contains many features that will allow the Marvell Elaine School District to better serve its students to make them competitive with their peers from larger and wealthier school districts.
