Description

Loving is a village in Eddy County, in the Carlsbad-Artesia metro area. It is located 10 miles southeast of Carlsbad and 20 miles northwest of the Texas border on US highway 285. The Loving Community was founded around 1900 by cattlemen making their headquarters in the Pecos Valley. It was named for Oliver Loving, a prominent early cattleman, and it was incorporated as a village in 1945. The economy of the area has been tied to agricultural production, especially cotton, hay, potash mining, chemical refining, oil exploration and a Department of Energy Nuclear Waste depository. The population of the community is approximately 1,350 residents. Loving Municipal School District serves approximately 600 students housed in three schools, elementary, middle and high school. The school district population is represented by 78% Hispanic students and 22% Anglo students. Attendance averages 97% at the elementary and 94% at the middle and high school. The high school graduates 90% of students entering grade 9, 62% of graduates attend post secondary schools and 85% of those students are continuing with their studies.
