GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES The coordinator of a mathematics curriculum and instruction program is responsible for providing leadership, alignment, coordination and delivery in the development and improvement of the mathematics curriculum program for the elementary school. The coordinator ensures that resources are available for teacher and student use and provides the necessary staff development for implementation of the assigned instructional program.
ESSENTIAL TASKS (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.) •Serve as the point person for elementary mathematics instruction and initiatives. •Collaborate with and coach teachers on the use of assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school mathematics data and plan for future mathematics needs; share assessment data with teachers and administration. •Provide direct instruction in the area of mathematics for identified groups and individual students. •Provide guidance in the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials and equipment for the assigned program. •Maintain basic and supplementary list of instructional materials. •Develop short and long-term goals for the curricular area with an emphasis on PreK-Grade 5 alignment and articulation. •Support and work collaboratively with principal and teaching staff to effect horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the school. •Provide ongoing mathematics instructional support and professional development for teachers. •Conduct classroom observations to determine instructional and/or coaching needs. •Develop, plan and conduct professional development activities for building-level. administrators, instructional staff and trainers for school wide initiatives, new classroom procedures, instructional materials, equipment and teaching aids. •Participate in parent conferences and provide instructional suggestions. •Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of NCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, NCPS policies and effective instructional practices; knowledge of the needs of students requiring remedial mathematics instruction; thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into curriculum; ability to guide and train teachers in effective techniques and strategies; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community; ability to use diagnostic data to tailor instruction to meet the needs of the student(s); excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills.
Must possess a Virginia Department of Education teaching license. A Master's degree with an endorsement as a Mathematics Specialist is preferred. Three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of mathematics was the primary responsibility, required. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
