Job Title: SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE                           Exemption Status:      Nonexempt 
Reports To: Principal/Director of Coordinated School Health

Rate of Pay: $17.00 per hour

POSITION RESPONSIBILITY
The substitute school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up. The nurse addresses both actual and potential health problems and promotes wellness in a safe and healthy school environment.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
·       Current State of Tennessee RN or LPN License (A copy of your active license must be presented at the time of hire and kept on file with the personnel office of McMinn County Schools. Failure to maintain an active license may result in termination of employment.) 
·       Valid Tennessee driver’s license 
·       Maintain CPR, First Aid, BLS, and all needed certifications 
·       Satisfactory Background Check 
 
Regular working hours are from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide direct nursing services, first aid, emergency care, and illness management for students and staff.
  • Assess student health complaints and administer medications and treatments according to district policy and physician orders.
·       Responsible for carrying out nursing and other health-related services, activities, and tasks in compliance with school district policies, IEPs, 504s, nursing standards of practice, Board of Nursing Rules and Regulations, and physicians’ orders.  
  • Maintain cumulative health records for each student and document care provided.
  • Conduct health screenings (vision, hearing, BMI, etc.) and refer students as needed.
  • Monitor immunization compliance and assist with communicable disease prevention and reporting.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and parents to address student health concerns.
  • Develop and implement individual healthcare plans (IHPs) and emergency action plans (EAPs) for students with chronic conditions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student health information in compliance with state and federal regulations (HIPAA, FERPA).
·       Must attend all training(s) provided and required by the Central Office as requested 
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, and standards.
  • Strong assessment, clinical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively in medical emergencies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational skills to manage documentation, records, and multiple priorities.
  • Familiarity with state and federal laws related to school health services.
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including a computer, medical equipment, and other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students.
  • Posture: Frequent standing; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting 
  • Motion: Carrying, pushing, stooping, reaching, talking, hearing, seeing, driving
  • Lifting: Lifting of objects that exceed 25 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. 
Work Environment
  • Based in a school setting with frequent interaction with students, staff, and parents.
  • Requires the ability to move quickly in emergencies, lift to 25 pounds, and manage physically active children.
  • Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases)
