Job Summary:
Norman High School is seeking a skilled and passionate Adjunct Percussion Instructor to join our band staff. This position is responsible for leading and developing the front ensemble during marching season and providing high-quality, year-round instruction in percussion fundamentals, chamber music, and instrument-specific masterclasses. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator or performer who can inspire students, collaborate with staff, and contribute to a culture of musical excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Marching Season (July - November):
Instruct and lead the front ensemble during summer band camp, rehearsals, and performances.
Provide individual and group instruction to front ensemble students to develop fundamental technique, musicianship, and ensemble cohesion.
Attend all scheduled rehearsals, performances, and competitions (including weekends as required.)
Leading instruction during the percussion class that meets in addition to zero hour band.
Concert Season (Year-Round):
Leading instruction during the percussion class that meets in addition to zero hour band.
Maintain a structured and safe rehearsal environment that promotes student growth and accountability.
Teach percussion fundamentals to all percussion students across grade levels 9-12, with emphasis on technique, reading, and musicianship.
Organize and instruct regular percussion masterclasses for the various instruments.
Provide input on repertoire, equipment, and percussion logistics.
Facilitate chamber ensemble rehearsals and performances, supporting student growth in small ensemble settings.
Assist with auditions and other performance assessments.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Performance or related field (or working towards completion of degree).
Strong background in rudimental playing and four mallet technique.
Previous experience working with students in an educational setting is preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong instructional skills
Understanding of scope and sequence in regards to percussion pedagogy.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to effectively collaborate with instructors and engage with students, and ability to promote teamwork and discipline.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 40 pounds).
Ability to stand, walk, and work for extended periods.
Working Conditions:
Variable hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on performance schedules.
