Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Network Security Officer designs, the Network Specialist installs, configures, monitors, and maintains the WAN/LAN connectivity and network infrastructure of the district.  The Network Specialist designs and maintains the wireless system and manages the server infrastructure.  The incumbent must be organized and is responsible for creating and maintain network topology maps.  The position is also responsible for creating, maintaining, and implementing appropriate network security protocols to prevent unauthorized access and other potential risks to the district information systems

Essential Functions:
 
  • Architect and install new hardware, systems, services, and software for WAN segments that span multiple data centers.
  • Maintain and support Active Directory system.
  • Install and support the server infrastructure, both physical and virtual.
  • Lead planning and support efforts for network infrastructure in a large-scale environment.
  • Perform troubleshooting analysis of switches, firewalls, and routing in multiple data centers.
  • Configure firewalls, access points, routing, and switching to maximize network efficiency and security.
  • Install, test, and configure Palo Alto firewall and other DMZ systems.
  • Maintain network file storage (NAS, SAN).
  • Maintain backup software (Veeam).
  • Configure and maintain Hyper-V virtual server environment.
  • Facilitate device refresh of network security devices with a focus on capacity, manageability, and security of new and existing security infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot firewall and web proxy issues.
  • Evaluate and recommend new and emerging services and technologies.
  • Maintain and construct district WAN/LAN.
  • Create and maintain network topology maps.
  • Assign and track IP address ranges to locations.
  • Configure and maintain routers at all locations.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing maintenance of network services such as:
    • Forwarding Proxy Servers;
    • Web Connectivity (HTTP/HTTPS);
    • Application Delivery controllers (F5);
    • Encrypted Remote Access (VPN);
    • Microsoft Identify Manager (MIM);
    • Domain Name Server (DNS);
    • Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS);
    • Mail Spam filtering and encryption (Barracuda);
    • Web Content Filtering (iBoss); and
    • IP address assignment (DHCP).

Non-essential Functions:

Required Knowledge and Skills:
 
  • Understanding of routers, switches, cabling and other essential network hardware.
  • Knowledge of security, internet protocols, TCP/IP, and server network infrastructure.
  • Using Cisco Prime, ISE & DLT products.
  • Strong understanding of Cisco Wireless communication design and configuration.
  • Skill in using f5 load balancers.
  • Skill in monitoring traffic and utilization with SNMP flow-based tools.
  • Ability to diagnose technical problems/failures and determine a proper resolution, leveraging all available knowledge and support resources to expedite that resolution.
  • Ability to use iPalo Alto Firewall configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Skill in using Cisco Router with routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, EIRGP).
  • Skill in configuring VPN’s, VLAN’s, and VLAN trunking.
  • Skill in managing Windows/O365 environment, Active Directory, Exchange, Advanced Threat Protection.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, GRE and other protocols.
  • Deploy and manage NMS, TACACS+, IPAM etc.
  • Understanding of VOIP using Skype for business.
  • Ability to do packet captures using WireShark or Netscout.

Required Education and Qualifications:
 
  • Requires one of the following:
    • a bachelor’s degree or higher in a computer-related field from a regionally-accredited college or university; or
    • a minimum of six (6) years of combined education and work experience in a computer related field.
  • A current certification in one of the following is preferred:
      • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA);
      • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP);
      • Microsoft Certified Expert (MCE)
Please note, if an applicant does not hold one of the certifications listed above, upon hire the applicant will be required to sign an agreement to complete at least one of the certifications within the first three years of hire date.  Failure to complete certification will result in separation.
