Job Summary:

The Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) Specialist provides professional development experiences to Granite School District ELA teachers in curriculum, instructional strategies and assessment for ELA content. The position focuses on promoting the implementation of the Utah Core Standards for ELA with research-based practices using district-adopted tools. The Secondary ELA Specialist will provide sustained support to Granite District secondary teachers through a continuum of coaching and professional development opportunities.

Essential Functions:


- Assist in managing and maintaining Granite School District approved ELA curricular resources, programs, and supports.
- Support the facilitation of Novels Committee and help maintain the approved novels lists.
- Help support and maintain the district ELA website.
- Support Granite School District ELA teachers in interventions, extensions, and instructional supports for Tier I instruction in a secondary setting.
- Plan and facilitate professional development for Granite School District ELA teachers.
- Support Granite School District ELA teachers in utilizing ELA related technology.

Non-essential Functions:


- Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:


- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Utah State Core Standards for ELA 6th–12th grades.
- Working knowledge of Granite School District Curriculum Maps, assessments, approved materials, and the Granite Way.
- Experience with and understanding of Granite’s Proficiency-based Learning (PBL) model.

Required Education and Qualifications:


- Requires a Utah State Board of Education (USBE) cleared criminal background check.
- Requires one of the following:

- a valid Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education with a professional secondary license area of concentration and English endorsement; or
- an equivalent license in another state.

- Master's degree from a regionally-accredited university preferred.

Required Prior Experience:


- Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience preferred.
- Experience working with adult learners preferred.
- Successful teaching experience in a junior high or high school setting preferred.
- Level 1 or Level 2 Reading Endorsement preferred.

Non-Supervisory Interaction:


- Interacts and collaborates with employees, board members, patrons, vendors, administrators and secretaries in schools.
- Works with various department secretaries, coordinators, managers and directors.
- Provides professional learning opportunities to Granite teachers.

- Not applicable.

- Not applicable.

Working Environment:


- Work takes place in a typical school or office environment.
- Supervision of students requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities (e.g. recess duty, gymnasium activities, etc.) in all types of weather and air quality.
- Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
