SUMMARY:   Create a flexible elementary-grade music program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth;  teach students to create, respond, perform and connect through music and musical movement; and establish good relationships with  parents and with other staff members.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

  1. Teach music, music literacy, performance, and musical movement to elementary pupils, utilizing a course of study aligned with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts Elementary/General Music.

  2. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

  3. Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

  4. Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

  5. Use repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional, world, and contemporary genres that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.

  6. Control the storage and use of school-owned property; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required.

  7. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.

  8. Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.

  9. Plan, rehearse, and direct pupils in musical programs for school and community.

  10. Select and requisition books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records.

  11. Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.

  12. Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

  13. Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.

  14. Participate in district-wide curriculum and other developmental programs.

  15. Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.

  16. Maintain professional competence through professional music education organizations supported by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.

  17. Assists with special projects 

  18. Be a collaborative team member with the OPS Fine Arts Department in maintaining a vertically aligned arts program.

  19. All other duties as assigned by administrator

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field

  2. Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate

  3. Koday and/or Orff certifications preferred

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education.  Ability to follow all district policies and procedures.  Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done.  Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators.  Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player.  Ability to document records accurately.  Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees.  Ability to listen effectively.  

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
