    Job Title: Counselor

     

    Credentials: Current Oklahoma Certificate as an Elementary/Secondary Counselor.

     

    Education: Master’s Degree.

     

    Training or experience required: 2 years of teaching experience.

     

    Reports to: Building Principal

     

    Contract: 190 days 

     

    Salary Schedule: Certified Salary Schedule.

     

    FLSA Classification: Exempt

     

    Essential Job Functions:

    Coordinate and gather information for Special Services (referrals, eligibility, interventions, IEPs, and auxiliary services.

    Perform applicable job junctions of Classroom Teacher.

    Lead guidance activities with regular classrooms.

    Conduct small groups for guidance/counseling.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills and to handle problems and provide information and technical assistance as requested. It requires complying with safety guidelines and policies to reduce accidents or injury to staff or to students. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns for staff. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving are critical to the success of the position.Help manage the computerization of school district operations. Provide training and support to district staff in the use of administrative computer systems. Perform such tasks to the ultimate benefit of the educational program. An incumbent in this position will utilize discretion, ingenuity and independent judgment due to the complexity of the job. Since there may be several ways to solve a problem, an incumbent is free to choose the solution.

    • Aid students’ course and subject selection.

    • Obtain and disseminate career information to students and classes studying occupations.

    • Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data and work with students in evolving education plans in terms of such evaluation.

    • Work to discover and develop special abilities of students.

    • Facilitate interventions and adaptations for students with academic or learning problems.

    • Register new students to the school and orient them to school procedures and the schools’ varied opportunities for learning.

    • Conduct dropout prevention activities (drug and alcohol education, violence prevention, AIDS education etc.)

    • Help students evaluate career interests and choices.

    • Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increase personal growth, self-understanding, maturity, and academic growth.

    • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such areas as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustments.

    • Plan guidance and field trips to schools, colleges, and industry for interested students.

    • Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.

    • Coordinate district standardized testing programs.

    • Network with counselors at other school sites.

    • Coordinate screening for students in vision, hearing, scoliosis, and other disabilities.

    • Attend job-appropriate professional meetings.

    • Consult with teachers and parents about student progress and needs.

    • Plan and implement in-service activities for school staff regarding guidance matters.

    • Facilitate Operation School Bell and other community opportunities for students.

    • Work with the administrator to coordinate crisis intervention procedures.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.
