Hawthorn Academy is seeking a Special Education Director for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. A Special Education Director oversees the development, implementation, and management of special education programs within a school district or educational institution. Here’s an outline of the job description:
Key Responsibilities: 1. Program Development and Management:
? Oversee the creation, coordination, and implementation of special education programs that comply with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., IDEA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). ? Develop and enforce policies and procedures for special education services. ? Evaluate existing programs to ensure they meet the needs of students with disabilities.
2. Staff Leadership and Development:
? Lead, supervise, and mentor special education teachers, support staff, and other professionals in the department. ? Provide professional development opportunities for staff to ensure best practices in teaching students with disabilities. ? Foster a collaborative team environment, encouraging communication and teamwork across departments. 3. Compliance and Legal Oversight:
? Ensure that the school district is in full compliance with state and federal regulations related to special education. ? Oversee the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students, ensuring they meet legal requirements and are appropriate for each student's needs. ? Monitor and address any issues related to student eligibility, assessment, and placement within special education.
4. Budget and Resource Management:
? Manage the budget for special education services, ensuring the allocation of resources to meet the needs of students. ? Secure funding and resources for special education programs, including grants, if applicable.
5. Collaboration and Communication:
? Work with parents, caregivers, and community organizations to ensure students’ needs are met and that communication is open and effective. ? Collaborate with school administrators, general education teachers, and other staff to promote inclusion and integrated services. ? Advocate for students with disabilities within the broader educational community.
6. Assessment and Reporting:
? Regularly assess the effectiveness of special education programs and student progress. ? Generate reports on program outcomes, budget usage, compliance, and any other metrics required by the district or state.
7. Crisis Management and Problem Solving:
? Address any behavioral or educational challenges students may face, ensuring appropriate interventions and support. ? Mediate conflicts between staff, students, and parents as necessary.
8. Student Advocacy:
? Advocate for the needs and rights of students with disabilities to ensure they receive a free and appropriate public education. ? Promote awareness and sensitivity regarding disabilities throughout the school district.
