Job Summary
Under the direction of the supervisor, operates and maintains industrial mower and other grounds related equipment to plant, install, grade, mow, aerate, trim and prune lawns, trees, shrubs, plants, and grounds.  Sprays lawns, trees, shrubs, and grounds with fertilizer, herbicides, and/or insecticides.  Removes and disposes of trees, shrubs, plants, sod, weeds, litter, etc.  Installs, maintains, repairs and replenishes playground equipment, playground surfacing (wood chips, bark, sod, etc.), fencing gates, artificial turf, asphalt, etc.  Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and winterizes sprinkler systems and related equipment.  Prepares and installs concrete under fence lines and provides assistance in repairing and finishing damage sidewalks, driveways, retaining walls, curbs, and gutters.  Operates snowplow and other snow removal equipment to remove snow and apply salt to sidewalks, parking areas, etc.  Transports and delivers equipment.   Performs pre-trip vehicle inspections.  May provide training to hourly workers. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position.
 
Essential Functions
  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance duties in working-level capacity
  • Operates haul trucks, trailers, snowplows, industrial mowing equipment, trade specific machinery and power and hand tools.
  • Plants, installs, grades, mows, aerates, trims and/or prunes lawns, trees, shrubs, etc.
  • Sprays lawns, trees, shrubs and grounds with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides, as directed.
  • Replenishes playground materials including wood chips, bark, sod, etc.
  • Removes and disposes of trees, shrubs, plants sod, weeds, litter, and other unnecessary items.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs playground equipment, fencing, gates, artificial turf, asphalt, playground surfacing, etc.
  • Performs concrete work under fence lines; assists in repairing and finishing damaged sidewalks, driveways, retaining walls and curbs and gutters.
  • Removes snow and applies salt to sidewalks, parking areas, etc.
  • Maintains industrial mowing and snow removal equipment.
  • Transports and delivers equipment.
  • May provide training to hourly workers.

Required Education and Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Class D driver’s license
One (1) year of demonstrated experience in grounds maintenance or related field
 
Required Prior Experience
One (1) year of demonstrated experience in grounds maintenance or related field

Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Skilled in use of hand tools, small and large power tools, power equipment, gardening tools, pruning shears, etc.
  • Knowledge in loading and securing equipment.
  • Skilled in the use of trimming and pruning equipment.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Basic oral and written communications and interpersonal relations.
  • Must keep abreast on changes in techniques relevant to this position.

Assigned Decision Making
Makes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish tasks assigned by the supervisors. Must take directions well and be able to work within specific guidelines.  Makes suggestions but must be willing to follow directions. Concern for safety of self and others. Determines repairs and replacement of equipment as needed. Prioritize work for specific jobs assigned.  Must be able to perform assigned tasks without on-site supervision.
 
Interactions with Others
Interacts positively with students, teachers, principals, and other district personnel.
 
Supervisory Responsibility
May supervise hourly workers.
 
Budget Responsibility
Financially responsible to maintain and track purchase card usage and follow purchasing guidelines.
 
Working Environment
Subject to a variety of temperatures.  Responds to district emergencies during irregular hours.  May be subject to high locations, awkward positions, heat, noise, dirt, chemicals, and confined spaces.  May have occasional stress from emergencies and in meeting deadlines. Interruptions may occur while performing work requiring accuracy and concentration.
 
Physical Requirements – Not limited to the following:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and/or hear.  Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, and crouch.  Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must be able to stand/stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift and /or move up to 100 lbs.
