Special Education Paraprofessional (Speech Therapy)
 
Position Purpose
Under supervision of a credentialed Speech Language Pathologist, completes a variety of tasks such as activities designed to develop pre-language and language skills, articulation and appropriate sound production, and use of assistive technology devices for communication; works with students who have identified speech and language disorders as well as other disabilities; performs related duties as assigned
 
Essential Job Functions

  • Conducts speech and language screenings, without interpretation, and uses screening protocols developed by the Speech Language Pathologist
  • Provides direct therapy assistance to students; follows and implements documented lesson plans; documents student progress toward meeting established IEP Goals and reports the information to therapist;
  • Assists the therapist during assessments by assisting with documentation and performing clerical duties; prepares therapy material and/or equipment for use in therapy activities;
  • Adapts or modifies instructional materials and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities;
  • Assists in maintaining student records, including tallying data; observes and reports significant behavioral patterns or other problems to the therapist;
  • Assists in maintaining appropriate behavior between activities;
  • prepares various teaching materials such as charts, pictures, word lists, and other related items.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs. 
    Equipment

  • Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers. 
    Travel Requirements

  • Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills. 
    Work Environment

  • Works in standard office and school building environments. 
    Qualification Profile
     
    Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Associate Degree perferred
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act. 
    FLSA Status:                       Non-exempt
     
    Contract
    29 hours per week 177 days per year
    Support Professional Employees Salary Status: E1
