Position Title: AmeriCorps Math Mentor

Member Position Description Summary:

Members will work in their assigned schools with small groups of 4-8th grade students who are two or more grade levels behind in math skills, building academic confidence and improving math skills programs. Custom math software will allow members of all educational backgrounds to act as a student's guide to greater academic success while providing the essential elements of personal attention and care. To assist them in this capacity, members will recruit, train and schedule volunteers to help provide mentoring. Members work with Lead Mentors, math teachers, and site supervisors to determine which students could benefit from the program and discuss the needs of each student enrolled in the program in an ongoing manner. AMMP staff will also work with members to build their skills and confidence in working with children in mathematics in the school setting.

Member Duties and Responsibilities:

MENTORING Lead individual or small group academic mentoring in math activities utilizing the personalized math learning software your school uses (iReady, ALEKS, ST Math, etc). Work with teachers, math teachers, and/or math coaches to determine which students are most in need of mentoring and ensure that these students receive 60-90 minutes of mentoring per week. Use AMMP tracking system (Mentor Tracking Sheet) to track intervention time, activities, and software test scores with all students they mentor. Help students set and achieve goals to help them take ownership of their academic and behavioral progress and develop growth mindsets. Respect and affirm the diversity of student backgrounds and experiences. Recruit, train and supervise community volunteers and/or older students to expand the number of students who can receive one-on-one support.

TRAINING Participate in scheduled virtual meetings with the AMMP team. Attend a pre-service orientation and training in August/September OR virtual orientation training at other times during the year, a state-wide conference in March, and online in-service training sessions for all AMMP Members. Participate in training assignments and discussion boards as well as monthly collaboration group meetings about such topics as motivating students, recruiting volunteers, etc. and provide them with the opportunity to learn from AmeriCorps members serving at other schools.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Complete a minimum of 15/25/50 (for 300, 450, and 900 hour members, respectively) community service hours to aid the community with needs beyond their regular tutoring program responsibilities. Hours must be done at or for the school, a nonprofit organization, or government office. Plans must be pre-approved by the onsite supervisor and may be amended at any time with approval from the onsite supervisor. Organize and participate in community service projects on National AmeriCorps Service Week, 9/11 Remembrance Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Hours involved are part of the community service hours.

OTHER Complete hours under the site supervisor’s supervision and record on timesheet prior to the 5th of each month. Meet with designated site supervisor regularly to discuss the needs of the students being mentored.
