Description
North Davis Preparatory Academy seeks a Lead Fifth Grade DLI Teacher in Layton, Utah.
NDPA is a Utah Public charter school with grades K-9, with a Spanish language focus where most elementary school students spend 35-45% of the school day with a Spanish-speaking teacher receiving instruction exclusively in the Spanish language. In 2010, the Ministry of Education of Spain designated NDPA as the first International Spanish Academy (ISA) in Utah.
Because of this prestigious honor, NDPA currently employs 10 visiting Spanish language teachers from Spain, 2 visiting Spanish language teachers from other foreign countries, and 6 permanent Spanish language teachers who are native to Spain and other Spanish speaking countries. These attributes of NDPA make it essential to require that the person filling this position has a demonstrated ability to communicate fluently and effectively (oral and written) in Spanish. The individual will instruct students in a dual language immersion (DLI) setting at the elementary school level at a state charter school and International Spanish Academy (ISA) with an emphasis on Spanish language, arts, and culture.
The individual's job duties will consist of the following: 1) Instruct students in subjects that are part of the DLI core curriculum in Spanish and English using various teaching methods and pedagogy typically used by schools in Spain and the United States (60%); 2) Adapt teaching methods, pedagogy, and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests (10%); 3) Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among students (5%); 4) Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children’s progress and to determine priorities for their children and their resource needs (5%); 5) Observe and evaluate students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical health, and preparation for later grades (5%); 6) Adapt and integrate the school’s Spanish language curriculum for the grade level taught, and organize the grade level program (10%); 7) Support administration in communicating policy and procedures (2%); 8) Such other duties and responsibilities as assigned (3%).

(Experience) No less than 36 months of full-time experience as a Lead 5th Grade DLI Teacher, teacher (elementary, secondary, or post-secondary), or related occupation. NDPA also considers a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Teaching, Language Studies, or a related field (or foreign equivalent) plus 60 months of full-time experience working as a Lead 5th Grade DLI Teacher, teacher (elementary, secondary, or post-secondary), or related field to be an acceptable alternative to the primary education and experience required above.
(Foreign Language) Demonstrated ability to communicate fluently and effectively (oral and written) in Spanish and English, which is satisfied by having a USBE Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Endorsement and USBE World Languages (Spanish) Endorsement.
(License/Certification) Hold valid: 1) Professional Educator license issued by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE), or be eligible to obtain one within 90 days of hire; 2) Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Endorsement issued by USBE; and 3) World Languages (Spanish) Endorsement issued by USBE. Alternative to Endorsements: If a candidate lacks the DLI and World Languages (Spanish) endorsements required above, they must be eligible to obtain both endorsements from the Utah State Board of Education within 90 days of the date of hire and they must also: (i) receive an "Advanced-Mid" or higher rating in Spanish on the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) [or OPIc] administered by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL); and (ii) receive an "Advanced-Mid" or higher rating on the ACTFL OPI [or OPIc] for English.
