POSITION:  MIDDLE SCHOOL DEAN of STUDENTS - 2 positions

SALARY/HOURS:

  • Pay scale:         2024-2025 Teacher Salary Scale:  https://www.mpark.net/departments/human_resources 

  • Position Length:         11 months/220 days

  • Hours:             Full-time unless otherwise specified  

  • FLSA Status:         Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

The position of Dean of Students offers supplementary supervisory support to the School Principal and Assistant Principal, ensuring staff and students receive essential support for success. This includes assisting school administration in leadership at the school level, curriculum development, effective teaching strategies, and monitoring student behavior and activities. The role focuses on fostering a positive, safe learning environment and collaborates with school staff and parents to address student academic, behavioral, and attendance concerns.

REQUISITE EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related content area required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Professional License issued by the Virginia Board of Education, or eligibility for same, required; endorsement in a subject relevant to the grade level to be supported strongly preferred.

  • Three or more years of successful full-time experience as a teacher, supervisor, or administrator in a PK-12 school with Middle School experience preferred.

  • Endorsement in Administration and Supervision or current enrollment in a program leading to such an endorsement is preferred.

  • Model leadership in the administration and supervision of the entire school program.

  • Able to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.

  • Possesses leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community.

  • Possesses strong communication, writing, and presentation skills which demonstrate the ability to assimilate, analyze, and present information clearly and concisely.

  • Know of and be able to use relevant technology

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)

  • Complies with all school laws, State Board of Education regulations, and all policies and regulations made by the School Board and Superintendent.

  • Performs all duties deemed necessary by the School Board and Superintendent for the efficient and successful operation of the school system.

  • Promote and communicate high expectations of students and staff performance in an enabling, supportive manner and provide appropriate recognition.

  • Assists in the implementation of the school discipline management system to provide a safe and secure environment, specifically, to coach teachers to improve classroom discipline.

  • Assists in monitoring student behavior in all areas and functions of the school. Ensures that students are adequately supervised during before and after school, transitions, and other non-instructional periods.

  • Supports attendance meetings and promotes school attendance initiatives.

  • Confers with teachers and parents to resolve student academic, behavior, and/or attendance issues that disrupt the learning process.

  • Conducts investigations and gathers information regarding student behavior incidents.

  • Serves as an administrative designee as assigned by the assistant principal.

  • Provides instructional leadership when appropriate.

  • Observes employee performance through non-evaluative observations.

  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.

  • Provide teachers with feedback on instructional practices.

  • Demonstrates commitment and actively engages in enhancing professional competence.

  • Supervises daily operations in the absence of the principal and assistant principal.

  • Supervise and support after-school activities, events, and programs

  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the building principal and assistant principal to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the school program.
